I tested the mast tip rotator today but noticed that the tip of the batten gets caught on the lanyard line when coming about? I expected the batten to strike the lanyard but figured it would glide under it without getting hooked up. The batten and cap stick out quite a bit above the edge of the sail. Maybe it could be shortened?  How do you guys that are using jibs/spinakers and the mast tip rotator cope with this issue?? /Gustav |

Gustav, you have a couple of options depending on what you are doing with the lanyard? Is it a halyard? Help me understand to purpose of the modification. |

I may have misunderstood. Gustav, I think when you say lanyard, you are referring to the Hobie spinnaker halyard line, correct? As the line extends aft to the stern, the sail comes to rest on this line and it messes with the twist in the leech of the main. You just have to furl the main a foot and then unfurl again to move the sail to the other side of the line. Shortening the battend won't help that situation much. Are you having line snags when furling the main in? That calls for another solution. |

Sorry, my bad.... of course I ment halyard!  As for now I just want to keep the mast tip rotator fixed in place (so it dont comes off) so I can utilize it as a fixing point for the inflatable mast float. In the future my plans are to rig a furling jib aswell. |

Thanks for clearing that up!  No snags when furling... that works fine. Yes I see, I tried to furl a bit but had the yak on land and it snagged anyway but I guess it will work better on the water when wind direction is changing according to the heading on the yak. Is there any reason to extend the tip rotator to avoid hitting the sail? |

Gustav, Lots of discussion on the snagging issue and workarounds in this thread: https://www.hobie.com/forums/viewtopic. ... 09#p290709 I tried a few extender ideas but in the end just accepted that furling the main to about the telltale window was the best solution. The mast tip rotator has never fallen off as standard as the halyard holds it in place, but when I added extenders it became unbalanced and would fall off when raising. The extra friction on the halyard added by an extender was problematic as well. |

It never dawned on me before now, (why the mast topper I made 7 yrs ago doesn't snag vs the Hobie mast topper. I at first was thinking because my mast topper extends out the back a couple feet, this was the difference, but my mast topper is not extended in the front, and doesn't snag up there either, (even with two halyards). Perhaps there is another reason. I used a piece of thin walled chrome plated brass drain tubing 12" long to extend my mast longer (mast is about 6-7" longer than stock). Perhaps raising the mast topper up higher helps clear the sail battons better. Obviously an extension tube would need to be made that both fits the mast and the Hobie mast topper. The extra mast height has never given me any problems, and I have never had snagging issues on the main battons, (even when running 3 sails, (main, jib, and spinnaker, (all furling)). I just used a piece of 1 1/4" chrome plated thin wall brass sink drain pipe 12" long ( I bought it at home depot, ( it was like $3bucks)). I'm still using all the same exact parts 7 yrs later, never had any issues, of course the parts are looking a little rough now after 7 yrs of heavy duty use, but everything still works. To get the drain pipe to fit the mast better, I wrapped the mast with electrical tape (all removable). Just thinking out loud, and tryin to help here. FE |

We have a taller rotator base cup coming that fixes the batten hangup issue. |
