Please post a picture of the "free upgrade" furling line guide with the furling line visible so I can understand how the function is meant to work.
From the installing guide (pdf-file) it looks as it should be mounted UNDER the bearing plate and due to description it should help the furling line to UP on drum. ???

Free Island Updates Announced To Dealers Today

We have received enough parts to start offering an AKA Lock update. We have also created a furling line guide that helps to prevent the line from getting stuck around the bearing plate. Both kits are available through warranty at no charge.

79520604 AKA LOCK KIT HINGED HOOK
This kit includes 4 sets of aka spring hooks and the aka bearings they lock to. This creates a more positive lock for the aka into the crossbar that is less affected by part distortion or aka twisting motions. This is standard on all new Islands. 79512101 ISLAND FURLER LINE GUIDE KIT
Keeps the furling line from getting stuck on the bearing plate. Guides the line up onto the drum when you pull on the furling line. This is standard with all new Islands. Instructions: https://static.hobiecat.com/item_attachments/79512101.pdf

There are a couple of back orders in the system still, but plenty of stock. We moved to a new shipping facility, so still trying to catch up on shipping backorders.

Thanks Jaques!

Maybe some misunderstanding: I have seen this pdf-file and from that I can see that furling line guide is mounted under the bearing.
I just cannot understand how something mounted UNDER the bearing can help the line UP on the drum.
Maybe I am an idiot but a picture showing the line guide WITH the furling line can help me understand how it works.

Best Regards
Thomas

I know Thomas has a Q in prev post.

Let me also post my Q here regarding the AKAS kit.

Hi Matt,

Other owners had bad experience installing the Lock bearing. Can i skip this? Hogman mentioned in other post the lock bearing is identical. I have new 2017 never used as its still cold here. Thinking to just replace the spring and not replace the lock bearing...Is this ok?

Hello,
I’m owner of a Tandem Island made in 2015. I’ve bought it at Proust Sailing on La Rochelle - France. At Paris sailing meeting on december, your technical specialist and Proust manager didn’t knew that incident.
Can you tell me if m’y TI is concerned ? Do I have to change those parts or not ? If yes, how can I proceed ?
With all my thanks,
Best regards
C. Hervé

Still no answer or explaining picture...

I have read the pdf about the furling line guide!

I don't understand how it works, maybe stupid...
How can a furling line guide, that is mounted UNDER the bearing plate, guide the furling line UP on the drum???

:? :?: :?: :?:

Best regards
thomas

Without the guide some people had the line go under the drum - that would then bind - the new guide just keeps it from getting stuck under and thus makes the line always come out at the correct angle therefor not getting stuck. I'm sorry that we don't have a better photo to share with you. Take our word for it - and anyone else who's mounted the kit - it works, and it's free!

Hi Jacques

Do you know if overtightening the screw on lock bearing can cause cracking to corners. see attached picture. I think step 2 should have a warning to not overtighten or simply look at the existing one and use that as the guide when to stop turning the screw. That may have explained why i was able to easily removed the screw. I think Hobie knows it should not be tightened to apoint where you cannot turn the screwdriver anymore. So now I have to spend $50.00 to replace the 4 bearings.

I think this part should be stainless and not plastic so no chance of cracking and cause the AKAS to come out while in use.
Crack is in four corners. just showing one in the picture.

Thanks for your answer!

As I understand the problem occurs when pulling out the sail and the furling line should roll onto the drum.
Then the furling line get stuck under the bearing plate, not just under the drum.
The "furling line guide" works more like an "preventer".
I take your word for that it works!

@nap
Normally I don't mind OT posts but in this thread I had to make my question three (3!) times before I got an answer.
I felt that focus was lost. Perhaps OT posts better should wait until my question had an answer.

Best Regards
Thomas
