So, I bought a 2013 TI with a bad mast. Long story, but I ended up replacing it with a new one from the factory. After 3 months of EXCELLENT sailing, it suddenly won’t lock into the mast receiver. I saw a thread where someone mentioned there may be insufficient epoxy to hold the furling sheet spool in place. Bottom line: had to take the sail down and peddle home from a couple miles out. Great workout! Need help: the lip of the ring that locks into the receiver is 9.5”. It is actually blocking a small part of the Hobie logo on the bottom of the lightning-rod warning on the mast. If this is an excursion due to insufficient epoxy, how do I fix it? Thanks in advance, as always. JJ |

I'm not sure if this helps, but I just repaired a TI mast that was snapped 1/2 right under the furling drum. My local West Marine reccommended an Epoxy that goes into a midsized applicator gun. It was a two part that auto mixes with a "tip mixer." It was a white tube with Blue lettering- probably 12-14inches long. I then purchased a ~3-4ft Carbon fiber tube off eBay that perfectly fit the ID of the Hobie mast. Overall, it was extremely easy to use & bonded the carbon fiber well. In my opinion, the hard part for you will be removing the furling drum (if it doesn't easily move) and when re epoxy'ing - placing it in just the correct spot. I was left with about 2mm extra height after I bonded the mast. That was enough for the locking mechanism to not work. Luckily I found some nylon washers that I placed under the 3 screws on the mast receiver and now it works. My local dealer does this sort of thing- you may want to reach out to a dealer and see if they want to tackle it first. |
