I was out sailing last weekend and all of a sudden my mast fell over to the side about 15-20 degrees. I immediately detached the main sheet and beached the boat. It appears that there is a small threaded metal rod with a stop nut that the bottom of the mast received attaches to. This rod had come out completely with the stop nut still on it? Is this repairable? I think the threaded rod ripped out. I still have some more disassembly to do before I can get an even better look at it, but I am not encouraged by what I've seen so far. |

I had this happen to a friend of mine during the last Texas 200 regatta. When he got home he was able to take off the crossbar and disassemble the mast support. He was able to removed the remaining sheered bolt and replace it all himself without help from Hoble (Hobie sells the bolt). It's not a hopeless situation as long as you can get at the sheared portion of the bolt that's left in the hull. If you can't, get help unless your really good with bolt extracting. Hobie offered my friend a new hull at a fair steeply discounted price. Better to get that than destroy your boat and you options by getting to aggressive with the repair. I would discuss the problem with your dealer and take pictures before doing anything. |
