Any interest from Island sailors for a frostbite sail on the Susquehanna River to Chesapeake Bay on Saturday, January 2, 2021? I am departing the Perryville, MD boat ramp between 9-10 AM, sailing down the Susquehanna River to Sand Island on the Chesapeake Bay and returning to Perryville between 3-4 PM. Favorable winds and temperatures are forecasted (for January!). Total sail distance ~ 13 miles. If interested post a note here. |

Fun sail with wind pushing 25 knots. No need for the outboard today. Dry suit came in handy! ![]() |

Thanks for the comment and interest. I am certainly open to joining other Island sailors on these excursions. I sail 1 to 2 times per month year round. Mostly day trips ranging from 15 to 40 miles (a few over 50 miles but these are rare). Average ~ 30 miles. Location: mostly centered on the coastal Mid Atlantic area for most of the year. I do try to get to Florida for a period of time in the 1st Q each year. By far the biggest gathering of Island sailors that I have joined is the Everglades Challenge (EC) held in March each year. (basically 300 mile race Tampa (Ft. Desoto) to Key Largo on the southern tip of Florida.....only for the bravest Water Tribe folks! Timing of trips is driven by the weather (temperature, wind (10-20 knots is my sweet spot), wind direction, and the tidal currents (rivers, coastal areas). Always try to sail with the currents (this is important given the poor windward sailing performance of the Islands...). Hoping to sail again in January and February this year in the Mid Atlantic. Safety note: Certainly safer with a group of like minded (and equipped) sailors compared to the solo sailing that I am currently doing. I have exchanged a few text / emails with other Island sailors nearby but so far limited meet ups. Hope to change this in 2021! |

We need to organize a “Chesapeake bay challenge” gunk hole for a night and get a bunch of miles in. Maybe we can plan something before the wind calms down in late spring? |
