So as I understand it, Hobie revised the AI in 2015 (pre 2015 being Gen1 and 2015 and newer being Gen2) and discontinued it in 2021. I just bought a used 2016 AI. Has anything been changed on the Gen2 over the 7 year run from 2015 to 2021. I believe the mirage drive has been improved as I don’t have reverse. Anything else? Just curious about the specs and if I need replacement parts, what would be interchangeable between model years.

The mirage drive had more than one upgrade:
Reverse and Kick-up fins are the biggest i think
The bolt at the base of the v-frame has became stronger
(From 1/4 to a 5/16)
If you have the 1/4 bolt it is recommended to replace it every now and than
Hinged spring hook and the lock bearing plate
(Lock system between x-bar and aka)

I think that is about it

Thanks Peter

I read about the v frame base bolt but thought that was changed for the gen 2. I'll have to take a look and see what mine is.

If you want the boat to go backwards just remove the mirage drive and flip it 180. On the TI we flip one backwards and keep one forwards in tight situations.

Just checked today and my v frame base bolt is only 1/4". Feels solid though.

You just bought your AI and you don’t know or it had a hard or an easy life, i would replace that bold

I sail a 2015 AI, never used a spinnaker what produces much more power on that bold, and i replaced that bold this winter just to be sure, its a cheap fix
