Post subject:  Hobie Heavy Duty Cart + Tandem Island

I have a Hobie Tandem Island and the Hobie Heavy Duty Scupper Cart. I planned a 0.4 mile portage on a flat and smooth dirt road the other day. After a short distance, one of the foam tires rolled off the rim. I was able to push it back on, but then the other tire fell off the other rim. I'm guessing I had 240 pounds on the cart (basically, just the TI). Is the cart just not up to the job?

Another thing I noticed about this cart is that it has massive amounts of rolling resistance... in fact, I took it down a steep hill once, and did not need to apply any "braking force".

Moving forward, I am curious if anyone has experience with either of these 2 carts:

I'm looking for something with lower rolling resistance than the Hobie Heavy Duty cart (and of course the ability to carry the Tandem Island without tires falling off).

Thanks!

Need a photo of your TI sitting on this cart to offer a reply to your questions. I have a few ideas....but need the photo to confirm.

Thanks, Jim;

Attached is a photo, though maybe not from the best angle. Note that in the first picture, it was the opposite side tire that had fallen off. By the time we got to the 2nd picture, both tires had fallen off. In the 2nd picture, you can see the tire looks a little "flat". If you zoom in, you might see that the bottom part of the tire is compressed against the rim, while the top part has raised up from the rim. Eventually we disassembled the boat and carried the amas separately. The tires still fell off, but not as frequently. Since posting this question, I discovered the ***'s in Hobie's catalog, and they do not seem to recommend ANY of the Hobie Carts for the island; only the Hobie Dolly...

I think moving forward, I would like to purchase one of the carts I linked above. It's a difficult decision, as the one with the balloon tires is pretty heavy and big, and I'm worried it might have a lot of rolling resistance. For future adventures, we would like to have the ability to take the boat on land, sometimes for long distances.

Agree. Looks like flat or low pressure in the tire. Either way the tires should not fall off the cart. Can't tell if the tires are hitting the bottom of the hull for additional friction.

Recommendations:
- Option 1: Get a small light weight used boat trailer that you can pull by hand or pull with a car. This will give you flexibility to transport the TI to other locations for future sailing.

- Options 2: Hobie Dolly fitted hard tires (for the dirt road) or balloon tires for sandy conditions.

Enjoy the TI
