Post subject:  One PA 17 or two PA 14’s?

Hi,

I am planning to buy my first Hobie kayak for inshore fishing in Long Island Sound. The PA 14 is my first choice, however, I will need to spend more money in order for my son to come along. Would you recommend a PA 17 or to buy him a second one seater? My main concern is by far safety. Is the PA 17 safer than the PA 14? Which one handles win, swell, and boat waves better?

I know that other criteria’s need to be considered as well (Transportation, speed, storage space, price, etc..), and I will welcome any comment that would help me make a decision. Again, though, what I am really looking for is the safest option for great father and son fishing days chasing these stripers!

Also, my son is 12 year’s old. Let me know if you think that he is too young for this kind of fishing..

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Raphael

Raphael. I've never been in a PA17 but I do have a friend who owns one and I do have a PA14. At this point in your life I'd lean towards the PA17 being your son is 12 unless he is already and experienced boater and strong swimmer. Too many things can go wrong with him in a boat by himself at that age IMO. Also rigging, transporting, and storing is typically easier with one boat compared to two. The PA17 is obviously heavy. A trailer is pretty much the only way to go as far as transporting it.

Post pics of what you end of getting please.
