Post subject:  LONG-DISTANCE CARTOPPING?
I am planning on taking my AI with, on a winter vacation in Florida (from my home state of Minnesota). I have decided not to trailer my AI but rather cartop transport it (could be bad winter driving in snow or ice)
I have a Yakima 'Kayak' carrier (curved hull-pads on crossbars) for my Jeep. But it is set up for carrying just one hull.
Has anyone tried cartop carrying an AI over a long-distance in the winter?

Do I need several more sets of Kayak pads, for the amas? I am worried about damaging them...what sort of protection would be needed to pad the amas from vibration and wear damage for a 3-4K mile trip? Especially when temperatures could be encountered ranging from 10 degrees below zero to 70-80 in Florida.

I would appreciate any suggestions or transport experiences.

Your current setup should work fine for the boat. I would duct tape some foam under the amas and then duct tape the amas to the rack. This way you avoid risking any damage from the straps putting too much pressure on frozen plastic. I've had my boat out in freezing weather (not 10 below zero) and haven't had any problems.

I cartopped my AI in near freezing temps for about 1,000 miles. I have a similar setup as you I think. I have thule j hooks for the boat and I place the amas side by side upside down on the racks. I taped pipe insulation around the racks for the amas and mast to rest on to help eliminate friction from vibration. The set up worked great. I like baysailor's suggestion about the foam to protect the amas. Have a great trip!
