| Post subject: | Carpeting TI cradles |
I'm trying to glue indoor/outdoor (recycle plastic) carpet onto the top of the Hobie rubber inserts on the cradles. The carpet is too thin in install in place of the rubber inserts. Tried the correct carpet adhesive and it's not bonding well. Anyone with experience doing this and a glue recommendation? thanx, bill |

Contact cement will probably work. Coat both surfaces and let dry then recoat both and attach after they become tacky per the instructions. Use the old school solvent based contact cement rather than water based. You can use wood dowel rods in between to position the carpet where you want it and pull them out as you stick it down. - C |

I used spray adhesive to adhere bunk carpet to wood bunks and it's worked like a champ, waterproof and all. This works like contact adhesive, spray both surfaces, let dry per the instructions on the can, and then attach. May not work with your surface, but, then again, it might. |

I used Sikaflex to glue some carpet to my TI cradles. I also added some high density EVA foam as padding in the critical spots to shape the universal cradle to suit the front and back position of the cradles for my trailer. The Sikaflex did not stick instantly so I had to clamp it in position, used plastic cling film to wrap it and hold it down then sat the boat on it whilst the glue dried overnight, making it the perfect fit to the hull.

I imagine the hull slides easier over the carpet then the original Hobie pads, is that the case? |

As suggested, Weldwood contact cement seemed to work well. I coated the rubber pads on the cradles as well as the Hobie Dolly, allowed it to dry and then coated it again. When the contact cement was slightly tacky, the carpet was pressed down. I used the Home Depot indoor/outdoor carpet (thin) that advertised the longest warranty. Works like a charm. Before - while on the trailer, I had to block the wheels and then pull fairly hard to move the TI even several inches. Afterwards, the TI moves like it's on rollers. Haven't tried the Dolly yet, but I'm sure it will make it much easier to remove the Dolly when the TI's on the beach, but I'll probably need to strap it down to keep it from sliding off pulling it to water's edge. bill |
