Hi all, new to the forum, though I've been lurking for some time.

I'm looking to buy a 2015 Tandem Island in Monmouth County, NJ.

I live 8/10 of a mile (flat roads) to a public boat launch (Glimmer Glass in Brielle), and just under 2 miles to beach (Manasquan).

We bike everywhere so really don't want to get a full trailer, and I don't currently plan on driving to use the boat, just use it locally.

So, what I'm looking for is a dolly / cart that I could tow behind my bike with something like a Dumb Stick. Since I'll be locking up my bike at either place, the cart doesn't need to be one that I could take with me in the boat, because I figure I'll just lock it up with the bike.

I'd say i'll be 75% going the short haul to the public launch (which is just a sandy path into the water, no concrete ramp) and 25% up to the beach.

Would I wreck the balloon wheels if I towed them on the streets?

I think I've seen some reports that the Hobie dollys with the cradles might not be big enough for the Tandems?

I'm not opposed to building something myself.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, and forgive my handle; I just used to sail a Prindle 19!

The one on Watermanatworks site I refer to most is the Kayak Scupper Dolly with 1 1/2" PVC and 1" PVC conduit make sure you use a zinc coated threaded 5/8" axle rod and zinc coated nuts and washers. Check out his detailed drawing of how to fit the axle into the PVC frame.

Thanks for the fast replies, looks like easy plans!

Question, I thought one of the issues I read was that the weight of the TI was too great for using a Scupper Dolly?

Does Waterman's note about having extra long tubes that protrude past the deck alleviate this concern?

And, I like the thought of adding the plug-in cradle, would you be adding that to the scupper dolly or the standard dolly?

That's a lot of weight to tow with a bike! I'm an avid cyclist and even I notice the Burley and my 30 lb toddler behind me. I couldn't imagine pulling 200+ lbs behind me.

I didn't şay it wasn't possible, just not very practical over any real distance. I'd like to see him climb any type of grade with that. Trikes and recumbents are notoriously bad at climbing.

Yes, that's what the wedgie-riders I used to ride with though too... Until I kept passing them on hills! :lol:

Okay, my 'bent weighs a lot more than a really nice racing bike - that's the only real problem with hill-climbing - but there's no reason it'd otherwise be poor at climbing.


As for towing a TI, getting it going isn't the issue. STOPPING would be my concern! :shock: I can just see getting it to the boat ramp - and it pushing me right on into the water!

But for short distances, the Hobie "beach cart" (the wide one) with foam-filled tires would probably do well. Get it centered under the TI and it balances nicely, very little weight to "lift", and it rolls nicely too. One of Hajime K's videos on youtube shows him walking his TI on the cart to a nearby boat ramp across fairly level ground. I don't know how far he walks, but it appeared to be more than just "across the road".

Hm, you might even be able to connect to the bike using the long handle on the cart? Make a sort of trailer tongue?

While I have little doubt that you could pull the trailer in low gears with a bike, but my mind keeps freaking out at you chasing the trailer down the ramp as it picks up speed and totally disappears underwater! Nightmare stuff I tell ya! :mrgreen: :mrgreen:

You know, I'm not a smart man, but momma always told me that if you pull your tandem island with your bicycle, you don't back it down the boat ramp. Your supposed to hand launch it when you get there. Now, me and lieutenant Dan have got to go catch us some shrimp.

I is hearing ya cap'n, but I was already assuming he has dismounted, and is leaning back with his shoes smoking as he tries to stop the trailer accelerating into the drink. Maybe my imagination is just too dang fertile! :mrgreen: :mrgreen:

:) I fully intend to dismount before trying to get it into the water.

Haven't tried towing that large of a trailer on a bike before, but, i have to think that if the dolly would allow me to hand tow it while walking, i'd be able to tow it behind a bike even more easily?

Any thoughts on the scupper / cradle questions?

I am in a somewhat similar situation for at least two weeks each summer and have put some thought into a similar idea, but have not yet tried anything.

I think a Dumb Stick would not be strong enough to support the front of the boat. I was thinking about using the plug-in wheels that I already have in the scupper holes closest to the middle of the boat (T.I.), as opposed to the rear holes, which would make the "tongue weight" way to heavy.

I was then thinking of modifying a used/beat-up kids' bike trailer in a way that I could secure the nose of the T.I. between the two wheels of the bike trailer, so the TI would be supported by the trailer wheels in the front and the plug-ins in the back, with the pivot point at the bike.

Edited to add: in my situation it would be flat paved roads with little to no traffic going over 5 mph leading to a paved boat-ramp, rather than a sandy one.
