This year I may have to replace my pickup truck with a conventional automobile. When that happens, I will lose the pickup's bed and rooftop box storage. To the end of accomodating that, I am thinking of replacing my Rack-and-Roll trailer with something like the standard Hobie double trailer as per http://www.austinkayak.com/products/487 ... Auha8P8HAQ and, instead of carrying a second AI, carry the rooftop box that I have on my pickup truck and maybe a bin for wet stuff. Can anybody see pitfalls in this approach? Mainly I am thinking trailer balance.... although I guess the fallback would be to ditch the rooftop box and put a narrow box on each side of the centered 2015 AI. |

Towing a trailer narrower than the vehicle is a lot easier and safer. If you have no need for the side by side double kayak storage why not look for a single trailer with an upper roof box? |

I made my top deck using unistrut. Awesome stuff! ![]() Sent from my SPH-L720T using Tapatalk |

While I love my current Trailex trailer (owned 3 so far) I would think twice about "stacking" storage boxes, etc. above the boat, especially if you plan long distance towing. The trailer is definitely solid and tracks well, but it is aluminum. I feel an elevated weight (boat box, etc) above the boat has a moment (force to cause a body to rotate about a specific point or axis) that will contribute to some 'fishtailing' of the trailer. The longer the main beam of the trailer, the higher the elevated box the more this would be magnified. I've owned a steel trainer (Hobie 16) and any potential fishtailing was prevented by angled braces supporting the trailer's main beam. Trailer trailers do not have these angle braces - only a very long single main beam. All said and done, I love the aluminum (no - low maintenance) weight and 'erector set' design that allows easy modifications. Just a thought. |

Checked User Control Panel | Private Messages | Inbox, but did not find anything. Did not see any place in my profile for an email address - so I am assuming that by "eMail" you mean the board's personal messaging facility. I added an email address to my signature line - how about sending them to that address? Maybe I'll get lucky... |
