Post subject: | 2015 TI Rudder Control Line Issues? |
After sailing yesterday, noticed a couple potential issues with the rudder control lines as they exit the stern. First, there's a grommet on the starboard line which I've not noticed before: ![]() Any concern with this? Second, the lines appear to be cutting into the plastic rings where they exit on both sides: ![]() After three sails, I'm wondering if the wear will progress and would appreciate any insights. Thanks for any help. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

That is odd. Why is the line exiting at such an angle? Maybe the lines are way to tight. The O-Ring belongs inside the tube as a floating seal. |

Matt I have the exact same issue on the left rudder line. Mine is cutting a groove directly upward and appears to be through the bushing. The right is fine. I have had alot of issues with the rudder lines bu thought I had remedied them, I also have that oring on the line on the outside. I just pushed it back in. |

Quote: cutting a groove directly upward This is baffling me. When sailing... the lines extend aft, not up. Maybe this happened in transit when we had the rudder on the deck for storage / packaging? Our demo boat here is the same though. |

When the rudder is attached above for storage there is no tension. I think is because the rudder lines especially on the left side are being forced by other lines to one side or up or down when under tension from turning. I think this needs to be remedied quickly as it will soon be cutting into the hull. |

I'll take a look at mine. I've only had it out twice though. I'll take pictures if there is any wear. |

Sorry for the large images. I have had the boat out about 10 times. |

Port steering line: ![]() Starboard steering line: ![]() Rudder up/down lines: ![]() Port steering line deflection (minimal amount of pressure): ![]() Starboard steering line deflection (minimal amount of pressure): ![]() I included the deflection pictures to show that I don't believe the lines are overly tight. It looks like the majority of the wear is on the port side (both steering and up/down) with a little on the starboard. Like I said before, the boat has only been out twice for maybe a total of 3 hours on the water. The fact that I had rudder misalignment right off the bat and now this abnormal wear makes me a little concerned. |

Mine is worse on port also. The tubes seem to be able to rotate somewhat so perhaps the direction of wear or tension isn't necessarily fixed. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Wondering if this is on all or just some of them. Not going to get to concerned until I get mine checked out and a few weeks of use. Will Hobie stand behind their product and make it right? This forum is a good place for them to get and give feedback. What's the fix Hobie? |

My TI looks the same, and again is worst on the port side. I remember noticing they were this way when I unpacked it fresh off the truck so it's something to do with packaging / shipping. |

I remember reading on the issue of putting a cover on the TI that you had to lay the rudder flat to cover it, and when doing this the rudder lines cut into the fittings. Could this be what causes this? Is this how they are shipped? I will be getting my TI soon I will take pictures of it out of the box. |

I just took delivery last Friday on my T1 and it has not been in the water yet. Looks like whatever is causing this was either from the factory or during shipping. Port side ![]() Starboard ![]() I also noticed that the lines were pretty tight. Any guidelines on how tight they should be? |
