I have a 2017 TI. This past memorial weekend my wife almost fell off our tramp when the front aka bar came out of the aka brace up front. I jumped in the water to reattach the port aka bar. I didn't pay much attention to the aka brace hole until I came home. My wife weights 135lbs. I don't think this should crack at that weight right? The wind was 3-5mph, less then 1 foot waves.This is what I found. Can this be claimed under warranty?

touayang84--In my preceding post, I may have misunderstood your problem. I thought your aka came loose from the crossbar and that led to cracking the crossbar at the connection. But, you refer to a "front aka bar brace." What brace? You need to get your pictures posted so we can see the problem. You can always file a warranty claim. Hobie will make the decision to honor it or not. Keith |

Yes, claim via warranty. The aka coming out placed extreme leverage load on the opening. We have an updated aka locking hook coming soon, but being sure it is locked is key. |

Thanks for the update Matt, I'm assuming this will be a recall? I purchased a 2016 new last year and am wondering if Hobie will contact me or if it's something I will have to request? BTW, great wee sailboat/kayak a lot of thought has gone into this watercraft. Cheers! |

This is not a recall issue. It is very rare. You would need to contact your dealer and file a claim. |

I had this happen in Dec 2014 to my 2014 TI. It occurred because the forward starboard aka came unlocked and worked its way out of the brace; this over stressed the aka brace and cracked it, resulting in catastrophic failure of the starboard aka/ama assembly. After limping the TI home, my dealer sent me a new forward aka brace under warranty at no cost and I replaced it. Since that scary incident, I lost some confidence that the akas will stay locked in, so I have my own alternative solution very similar to the "keep out" lines mentioned in this thread (mine utilizes cargo straps across the akas and aka braces and threaded around the tramp buckles). If I read Matt's post correctly, it looks like there might be a safety pin solution out soon. Could this be retrofitted to a 2014, Matt? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

In the meantime, less that $5 of parachute cord tied across the akas will definitely prevent the akas coming out accidentally. No need to wait for any fix from Hobie. |

Definitely going to put "keepers" on until this fix is out. mine came out on the upwind side so the failure was not as violent as it could have been on a downwind aka ama collapse. Until the fix, putting a homemade safety line on there would be prudent for all TI users.. Bout time for sailing.. |

Just in case others were confused like I was initially... The "aka brace" is the diagonal bar which connects the aka to a ball on the deck. On the TI it leads aft, while on the AI it leads forward. The part being referred to here is the "aka crossbar" |
