My PA had over 1" of play in the rudder and it seemed the rudder turned much more one way than the other so I adjusted it. It still turns more to the left than the right but it is more evenly matched. There is no play in the rudder now but I may have the strings too tight, how much play should there be in rudder when properly adjusted? I have not and probably will not change the steering drum as I have gotten used to how sensitive the rudder is. |

Centering the rudder is done by raising (centers) and the adjusting to the tiller in the center position. Tension is adjusted by the knob under the handle assembly. Tension changes by ambient temperature changes, so adjustments may need to be made more often for the best feel. |

Thanks Matt, never thought about the temp factor. |

I then centered the tiller next to the seat and then I centered the rudder at the back of the PA. is that what you mean by "raising (centers)"? my main question is how tight should the strings be after one tightens the screws in the drums that hold the strings? |

Quote: is that what you mean by "raising (centers)"? I mean to raise the rudder up into the hull using the rudder up control line. That holds the rudder blade centered easiest. The line tension is adjustable using the knob under the steering handle, so tension at the rudder drum is not important really. I suppose if you have the knob set to loosest position and then take up all of the slack from the system back at the rudder... that could be an issue. I'd say... figure out the knob part first. Reach under the steering handle. As you turn the knob the steering line wraps around the bolt and winds up / tensions the lines. |
