Some things you can't control. I know kayaks are small and sit low on the water, but sometimes the other guy is just not going to be paying attention. This guy was in a white kayak, wearing a yellow PFD and was fishing during daylight hours, overcast notwithstanding. Not much more he could have done to safeguard himself, other than perhaps having a strobe going the whole time. The guys in the power boat simply weren't paying attention. Glad nobody was hurt. |

He's got a flag on the yak and an orange buoy on what appears to be his anchor line, in addition to the things Tom pointed out. Once I figured out I was okay, I'd have been in that boat and there would have been a world-class a$$-whipping for that world-class stupidity and lack of attention. He wouldn't forget to pay attention again. |

I would have called the police. There were 2 guys on that boat and none of them say him. Maybe a little to much drinking goin on? That would put a wake up call on them. I think every boater need to be liscensed, so people are aware of the possibilities, hazards and others. I know in cali. you have to have a observer and a flag when skiing so the driver can pay attention to driving. Here in Texas the dont do that, and thats how come they hve alot of accidents. If not licensed then at least a boater and kayak awarness program that you have to do every couple of years.

Wow! This is something I really worry about in the busy waters where I usually fish. I never take for granted that powerboaters see me, even with all of the safety measures. The kayaker took a picture of the boat, so hopefully he was able to get the registration number and file a report. I don't know if you noticed, but his paddle ended up in the water and floated away. It doesn't appear that he noticed in the video. I hope he found it or was able to file a claim against the moron boat operators! |

It looks like the boat caught his anchor line which is what turned him around. It just goes to show you how helpless you can be to others with power boats on the lake. I'll give the Hobie kayaker credit, I wouldn't have been that nice... |
