Sea worthy?

Post subject:  Sea worthy?
I have a PA 12 which I normally use in lakes, slow rivers which I have to muscle my boat to most of the time. I have a buddy who lives in Australia and he was asking if it was sea worthy. From very limited experience in the ocean (10 minutes), I told him it was ok when/if you get past the breakers but personally I would not like to be in any sea higher than 1 foot in my 12 footer. I also told him if I lived where he lives (near Sydney), I would have a 14 footer with a trailer with a winch, even if I had to hock my wife. :)
I would appreciate any comments regarding the sea worthiness of the PA 12/ 14.

Frankly, in his shoes I'd prefer to be in a Hobie Island. The sail offers the potential to travel longer distances in less time and the Islands eat up seas that would be a bit difficult in the PA, either length.

I had my PA 14 out beyond the breakers this past weekend for the first time. I was nervous messing around in surf with it initially, but on the launch it ran right through the small breakers. I walked it out until I was deep enough to get the drive in, then timed out the sets and entered the boat during the lull - pedaling up to speed to take the first breaker...granted I was only launching in 2' waves. Landing was a little more tricky. I came in nose-first, basically following waves in to the shore. Naturally the last wave picked me up and carried the PA - I was able to keep it straight right until the very end, then it started getting sideways. Fortunately I was able to get the leading edge up and it glided in sideways. I still have to get around to practicing a backwards surf landing... :D
