Post subject:  PA 12 or 14?
Hey Guys
I think im going to get a PA just not sure if its the 12 or 14 I do go out offshore but also inshore (Flamingo, Choko)
It it top heavy? how slow is it? How shallow can I go?
I have a Outback now so maybe a point of reference. Im a big guy so the room would be great!
Any input would be great

Big guy? Me too. i12s owner and PA 12 owner. I'm going to bullet this out.

- PA is the slowest
- PA is the most stable.
- PA has turbo fins stock which help boost by about 10%
- If you're big as in fat and out of shape, you'll be slower than the guys in a revo or OB
- If you are big and in shape, or just have strong legs you'll keep up no problem.
- Get a sail? :)
- In general, longer kayaks are faster kayaks, the only issue w/the PA is the width causing some drag, but meh, who cares. The rest of the time you'll be thankful.

PS - I come in around 252lb these days. I stand and walk around my PA 12 no issues, you just need to find your sea legs.

From the guys who have used the PA offshore the largest problem is learning to beach them without the nose diving into the sand. Other than that you will not be disappointed with either.

Sarge, I think Pranglers are like tackle boxes: no matter how big it is when new, it's stuffed full in no time. And nobody ever wishes they'd bought the smaller one.

The hardest part can be keeping the 'yak from sliding sideways while you try to tip it up. As long as it doesn't slide, just roll the yak on its side and slide in the wheels. The two grooves in the hull guide it, so you only have to move the wheels back and forth a bit until the probes find the scuppers. Easy-peasy.

I just purchased the PA12. I went in to the dealer with full intentions if buying the PA14 but the salesman talked me out of it. He told me it was extremely hard to handle the 14 alone and that the 12 was plenty. I love my 12 but after seeing how easy it is to handle the 14 with a hobie cart out of a truck bed, I'm second guessing my decision. I'm not sure why he pushed the 12 so hard when he knew I had a truck and was not top loading onto an SUV. The 12 is still a great boat and fits me perfectly ..... I'm 6'0, 230 LBS.

That is exactly what I dont want to happen thats why I think Ill get the 14. I dont want any regrets :oops: later on..

Don't second guess yourself. I have a PA-12. Once it's rigged and you have all your equipment loaded including batteries bait tank ect. it can be a hand full.
I am 6-3 270# and have never felt that I needed a PA-14.
I usually load my PA in my long bed F-350 and I am glad I don't have that extra two foot hanging past the tail gate.
When I do launch at a place with a launch ramp I am able to back down the ramp and launch the PA off the back of my truck. I can do the same when I come back from a day of fishing. I just back down to where my rear tires are just out of the water. Then I bring the PA behind the truck while I'm standing in the truck bed (using a bow line) I pull the bow up onto the tailgate and slide the PA up onto the truck bed. I don"t think I could do that if I had the PA-14.

Another issue with the extra weight of the PA-14 is if you have to launch over sand. Even with a PA-12 it can be a challenge especially if the sand is soft. I have 13"x5"x6" pneumatic wheels on my cart and I needed held getting on PA off the sand on my last trip to Bahia Asuncion.

Some people say the PA-14 is only 20# heavier and that's not much but with a bigger yak you will have a tendency to carry more.
Lately I've been forcing myself to carry less. It seems that I carry stuff I never use because I have a place for it.

I have the PA14 and have no issues moving it around or loading it into the back of my F-250 with full length bed. My kayak it's very loade and still I have no issues moving it. I do have the Hobie dolly but only use it if I need to wheel it long distances. I do not recommend the Hobie
carts for the Pro Angler yaks because of the high weight. The kayak doesn't hang out of the bed very far.

you might have read where I posted this somewhere else, but..... I have the 14 and THW that back of truck thing :lol: I got a small trailer (old waverunner trailer) and launch it like I would a boat. On RARE occasions I put the dolly under it but only when I don't have access to a launch ramp.

Heck, I have no problems getting my PA14 atop my Durango by myself. I think the added length is a benefit for this, because the first step is to get the bow up there, and a shorter boat would mean a much steeper angle and less room between the tailgate and the hull. Note this:
