I have the Lowrance Elite-7 HDI and the manual/specs state it has a theoretical max depth of 2500 feet for the 50/200 kHz operation. I can say from experience that my Furuno unit that was on my offshore boat with a through hull transducer struggled to keep lock at 1000 feet. I think you should be fine with most conventional units at 400 feet. I don't think structure scan will work that deep. It will come down to transmit power and sensitivity settings in the unit.
