Post subject:  Re Drum upgrade, again

Spring around here now and my PA 14 is due to be put back on the water. BUT, will I this year be able to replace the Drum? Gave up last year - the pin is stuck! And it did not disapear during winter. I really can not find a way to get it out. I am able to hammer it carefully until it is hidden, but from there no way. It seems hollow, and when I try to use a nail to get it through it is just getting more stuck, dragging it out from opposite side, no way. I have used all the adviced tools. Sorry but larger tools will just damage the boat. I think I placed a similar message a year ago, - I just have to live with the old one.

A nail isn't the right tool to remove the pin with. The pin, a roll pin, is indeed hollow and the nail head is just going into the opening and spreading it, in effect locking it in place. You need a pin punch to remove the pin. It should be sized to completely fill the bore in the shaft so that it contacts the outer edges of the pin. Pin punches are flat on the end, not pointed.

I know, my english vocabular did not give me the right word. I have tried all kind of dimensions fitting exactly to the hole - it is just stuck. Will certainly try again but ....

I don't know if this will help or not, and you may have already tried it, but if not, try knocking the pin out from the opposite direction.

Some spray lube or WD40 in the hole for a few minutes first might also help. Good luck.

If needed, cut the pin ends off with a dremel.

I also had a brutal time getting this roll pin out.

As Tom K said, the nail head just expanded the roll pin. So I did as Matt said & used a dremel tool to very carefully cut off one mushroomed end. Then I got a nail long enough to reach past the well of the drum cavity (so I could hammer it without damaging the hull). I ground the nail down to the exact diameter of the roll pin (1/8 "). I ground the nail tip flat & perpendicular, lubed the pin up w/ WD-40 & gently hammered it through with the nail. Fortunately I had enough material on the other end to grab it with a vice grip & the push/pull worked.

I replaced with a SS cotter pin.

Good luck.
