Post subject:  Paddle storage
I have a pa12' and was wondering if anyone has any better ideas for storing the paddle on the kayak.
With the lip provided on the left side of the boat the paddle interferes with my cooler set up.

Post a picture of the area your talking about. On my PA12, I relocate the "new" paddle clip the outermost rear bungee holder in the tankwell (removed & replaced).
Also do a search for Pro Angler paddle holder ideas....

Does anybody have any updates for storing their paddle(s)? I was thinking of a Scotty paddle clip on either side of the tank well and wondered if it has been tried. Photos are welcome.

I know Railblaza makes some holder attachments that can be mounted in various ways. It all depends on where you want the paddle. Post some pictures of your setup like Lt.FireDog suggested so folks can see what challenges your setup has and offer some suggestions. Here's the link for the RailBlaza accessory. I use the Hobie "U" shaped clips with the tie down cords probably similar to what Lt.FireDog stated. It does not affect usage with either the Livewell Xl or my YakAttack Blackpak.

Here's a picture on where I put my paddle. I added an arrow pointing to the spot where I believe Lt. was referring to. Those pieces "unscrew" and the paddle clip I use can be screwed in at that location. That would definitely be out of the way of a large cooler.

Thanks SRAces. I have a 2014 PA 14 but I don't have a current photo handy. I was contemplating the Scotty paddle clip (no. 136) mounted just behind your arrow point on either side to mount half the paddle on each side. As it stands, I have half the paddle in the stock holder provided by Hobie and the other half wedged under the shock cords on the opposite side of the tank well...in essence 'framing' my precision pak. Although it works, I find it a bit of a pain moving the pak or accessing the paddle. Would you know if you could unscrew the stock clip and screw it into the spot your arrow is pointing to?

Any and all ideas for paddle storage are welcome.

Dang SRAces....that's a nice looking set up you have there!! I too use the Hobie U clips for my half paddle but I'm concerned that with the new XL Livewell and the strap that ties into the built in pad eye like yours, that the strap may interfere with getting my paddle in and out.....I'll try it this weekend for the first time.....love the Seadek too!!!

I moved the Hobie paddle clips I use with the lanyards to that spot by the red arrow. It can be done. I can tell you sitting in the seat and reaching back that far is not good for me. It will clamp securely in the clamp like it is in the picture. Moving the paddle forward more causes the t-handle to contact the top of the PA since that area behind the railing is raised up slightly.

For carrying both paddle sections, I usually put the non-T-handle end on the left side. I usually use that left side paddle clip for my YakAttack SOP. But the new H-Rail rod holder can substitute for holing the SOP securely on the left if needed.

The padding is SeaDek. The padding is awesome and really makes a difference in comfort. It deadens sounds on the floor, is very comfortable barefoot, is not slippery when wet and does not heat up being in the sun all day. I will not own another PA without it. On my third PA14 and all three have had SeaDek installed. They are very close to putting the 2015 kits online. You can order a custom kit anytime. Just call SeaDek and ask for Kira. She will take good care of you and answer any questions you might have. Tell her I sent you...lol!

Yeah...I was noticing the straps for the Livewell XL myself. Let me know what you see. I like having my half paddle where it is. I should know Sunday whether my current setup will work with the Livewell XL after I get home from the saltwater trip on Saturday. Not using the livewell on the Saturday trip. Just picking it up from my fishing buddy who went by the dealer for me. Thanks for the SeaDek comments. I love it and am pretty happy with the current setup. I did pick up one of those H-Rail tackle tray/boxes, but haven't figured out where I want to use it. But it's nice to know I have it if the need arises! :D

No question that is a good looking ride SRAces. Considering your comments, I am leaning even further toward mounting the Scotty paddle clip in the space to the left of your arrow point. It seems to be dead space and with that paddle clip I believe you could slide the paddle up further so the T grip is virtually touching the back end of the rail making it very reachable. With a clip on each side, it should be pretty convenient to carry both paddles. I may improvise with velcro or something before making holes to see if it works.

I got back from my saltwater outing and decided to unpack the new Livewell XL. Jury is still out for the lid color. Will see if it grows on me. Still prefer black, but might hold off spray painting the lid black for a little while. Stopped by my Hobie dealer before the 2 hour drive back to GA. They didn't have the black hatch in stock. Not impressed with the quality control of the assembly, but I'll post that on the Livewell XL thread.

I want to share a picture for Luv2fishnpaddle. Luv2fishnpaddle...you are right about the Livewell straps getting in the way of the paddle on the paddle clips. I played around with various concepts. Worst case I could just lay the T-Handle half paddle on one side of the floor/seat when on the water. Rod storage in the tubes and by the seat is only used when I transport the PA. On the water all roads are in a holder, so having the paddle on the floor might not be a big deal.

I might try the concept below and see how it feels. I purchased a couple extra of the H-Rail rod holders when I bough the 2015 PA. It's not flush against the hull. It's tilted out just a little. Just throwing this out there as a concept for paddle storage in case someone else might want to try it. I thought abought mounting one of the current paddle clips on the H-Rail 4X2 inch universal mounting plate like the rod holders in the picture. That way I could clip the paddle in the middle and use the clip's tie down cord if needed.

UPDATE: Came up with a better solution using the 4X2 H-Rail plate and the paddle clip. Will post a picture in a little while. Repainting the Livewell XL lid black at the moment and letting it dry between coats.

Ended up with this arrangement. It's out of the way of the new Livewell Xl straps. Right handed, so I reach for the paddle more with the right hand. It's right by the handle on the right so it's easy to reach and re-attached.

I don't like clutter and try to keep a balance between what's on the inside of the rails and on the outside. While items on the outside would not interfere with an anchor on the anchor trolley. A SOP through the trolley rings could be impacted depending on whether you are adjusting a SOP location along the side with the trolley. More times than not I use the anchor for sitting on a spot for long periods and then just use the SOP to secure the boat at the right angle. You have to love the H-Rail setup as it allows you to play with locating items without drilling any holes! :mrgreen:
