Hello all! I'm in the process of buying a 14' PA this week and had a question about the trailer I am planning on using. It is a venture trailer and my question is how far should I have the bunks set apart to carry the PA properly? I plan on transporting it with the seat installed in the upright position. I know the boat weighs about 140 pounds rigged and I am not super concerned about the weigh. I would just like to make the transport down the road as smooth as possible. Thanks for all the information, as well as all the topics posted on here before, it made my decision super easy to go ahead and get a PA!

That type of bunk is not what Hobie Cat recommends, so I can not comment on the effectiveness or placement. The bunks, if not very bendy, will have hard contact points because the boat is relatively light. We recommend the Hobie PA cradles at 67" spacing that have broad contact areas, so if you can adjust to fully support the hull...

Alright, it seems like a utility trailer with a flat bottom or a few pieces of the grey pipe will work the best. I was told by my hobie dealer that I would not be able to put the boat on the factory roof rack on my 4runner.

You could use that trailer, add some unistrut from Home Depot across the frame, then add 3" schedule 40 electrical conduit. Thats how mine is set up. Will post pic this weekend. Conduit is 12.5 inches apart at the centers. Check out hobie angler youtube vids for ideas to.

+1 on what flfishnkayak says. Unistrut/Superstrut and PVC, that's how I have mine set up also, trailer and garage storage rack.

I used 4" PVC, but that's just because I had that laying around. I now have it setup to haul two yaks (added another set of pipes since the photo).

Hello all! I did pick up the PA and the trailer. I adjusted the bunks to hold the weight as well as possible. I will be adding the PVC to the trailer ASAP. Thanks for all the help!

Bumping this up for another question...I picked up the trailer and adjusted the bunks so that they are very narrow and support the bottom of the PA rather well. I've also used the front rubber roller on the trailer to support and cradle the front of the PA. Looking at the PA from the front to rear on the underside there doesn't appear to be any points of impingement or pressure. The yak is supported by the 4 FT long carpeted bunk and the rubber roller near the front of the trailer. The only issue I've noticed is going down the road the straps will loosen ever slightly after I have an extended trip that is extra bumpy. I guess the main question that I have is are the PVC bunks necessary and If the yak is supported by the bunks and roller will that suffice? I have no apprehension on attacking the PVC and uni strut as it seems rather simple. Just wanted to get some opinions on the matter. Thanks for the help!

The reason why I used 3" PVC parallel pipes to support my PA-14 is they "sag" and do a good job conforming to the hull shape. If this were my PA, I would change the supports immediately to PVC......it's a low cost proven method.

Last year I bought a double jet ski trailer for my PAs. Until I decided how I wanted to mount my 2" PVC rails I did a slight mod to the bunks. I reversed them and then angled them to fit between the hulls of the boats. When angled, the boards fit almost perfectly in the "crease" of the hull, but in my opinion they were entirely too stiff. When strapped down, I was afraid I would deform the hull and possibly damage it. As soon as possible, I removed the bunks entirely and replaced them with PVC. It spreads and sags to conform perfectly to the hull.

Want to be sure I've got this correct. The 3" schedule 40 conduit should be on center, 12.5 inches apart. The distance between the front and rear Unistrut should be 67 inches. Sound about right for a PA 14?

Bill.....I spaced my schedule 40, 3" OD, front pipes 11.5" on center and rear is 12.5" on center, on the cross bars/supports.....crossbar support spacing is 67.5". You can always remove the seat, invert your PA-14 and lay the PVC pipes on the hull to see how they line up.....that is the method I used to determine the spacing. I also used contact cement to bond a 4" wide strip of indoor-outdoor carpeting across the top of my PVC pipes....adds a little cushioning between the PA and PVC pipes. Good luck!
