Post subject:  2015 PA12 Skeg

Hi all

I've purchased one of the Hobie Grand Final Fishing tournament PA12's in Western Australia. Overall I'm very happy with it. I have an issue with the skeg after I retract it. The line seems to jam under the lip of the rear hatch and I am then unable to extend it again. I need to open the hatch and pull the line out from under the lip of the rear hatch.

It seems strange to me that the line tracks straight across so close to the hatch in the first place. Is this installed correctly? Can someone point me to a line rigging diagram for the retractable skeg in this model? Any help would be appreciated.

There is no diagram for the new models that I am aware of. I'll ask engineering and the factory for guidance.

I was getting ready to do a walk around video tonight and getting everything ready i noticed the skeg was acting odd. I would pull the line up to release from the cleat and the rope moved but the skeg stayed up. long story shorter the line was caught above the inside ring of the rear 8" hatch. I also removed the cover over the rudder lines and found that the line for the skeg didn't have a hard plastic sleeve protecting the hole where the line goes down through the kayak to the bottom and the skeg. Just wondering if this is normal or did a sleeve just get forgotten? The line is actually cutting into the kayak where it goes into that hole so that can't be good if you ask me. I understand there will be issues and believe me i love this kayak so in NO WAY am i bad mouthing it just making sure it is something that is monitored and the Hobie folks are aware of. Mahalos!

Fuzzy crappy pic but the line pulls tight and the hole is getting cut into by it.

I've noticed the same thing, see my thread
http://www.hobiecat.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=78&t=53449.
I'm hoping for a diagram to make sure it's rigged properly.

We have seen the same issues on a couple of 2015 PA12's in my neck of the woods .
In fact there is a thread where MMiller is already looking into it here viewtopic.php?f=78&t=53449
Had not noticed the rubbing on the hole downwards to skeg .
Thanks for pointing it out so I can keep an eye on mine .
Cheers Brendon

Thanks gents, i thought i saw it on here before i posted but hit post new thread and started typing before thinking that there was one so shoulda just added to your post. Does yours have a sleeve protecting the hole that the skeg line goes down through the hull? everything else under the rudder cover has it minus where the skeg and the rudder lines go down. Why wouldn't they add the sleeve to those spots too? Friction of the line against the hull = bad lol

PS maybe an admin can join the to posts? didn't mean to start my own on something just talked about. shoulda paid attention before i hit new thread.

I noticed that my skeg wont go down either unless I do it manually and was woundering if there have been any developments or tricks to get it to work properly.

The one thing i am thinking of doing is putting something in there at the underside of the 8" hatch that would be like a cable fastener

I think you might be able to get this in between where the hatch top screw goes thru the hull and into the bottom part of the assembly with the skeg line in the rubber part to help protect the line. I will have to check it out and see if it will work and post a picture. think i will try and do it tomorrow!

Would like to hear what Hobie is coming up with as well! and something to protect where the line is rubbing going down thru the hull to the skeg itself.

Why not install and use the same nylon fitting/insulator the "rudder retract, up/down line" is fed through?
The black plastic fitting appears to have a nylon, Teflon or delrin center insulator to protect the line from wear.

Engineers are looking into the issues. I suspect the line wear at the hole is more compression from load than wear, but noted.

I agree fully Dr. SC. I don't understand why there wouldn't be one of those anywhere the line or rope touches the hull?? is that how it is for the rudder line in the pre-15s? seems like that would be an easy fix.

mmiller, thanks for all you do in helping us stay informed! Do you mean that the line is only doing that to the hull because it is getting caught in the hatch ring or because a line is too tight? I'm assuming the first one because it doesn't seem like there would be enough tension on it to cause that under normal conditions? of course im not sure of anything just my thoughts.

This is an assumption more than experience myself.

When you pull up the skeg and leave it tensioned... The line may dent the material. This is the way all of the rudder controls have worked I believe. We had issues with the line turning blocks pulling out of the cockpit walls due to constant load and material "creap", so depends on how hard someone pulls and cleats the line. The best is to ease it off a touch before cleating to reduce loads.

checking to see if this will be a legit fix. right now it is just wedged in between the hatch ring and the hull. if it looks like it will do the job i will look at a good way to secure it. will find out tomorrow on the water if it keeps the line from getting stuck.
