Hello everyone,

Buying my first Hobie this coming week (Boat Show Discount), went ahead and built a cart for garage storage based on some examples I have seen and comments.

Would like any advice or suggestions from those who have done something similar. Obviously, not a cheap boat so want to store it correctly.

Just sold my first kayak, NuCanoe Frontier 12.....nice, but found myself not going out when winds were over 8-10 mph, just too much work paddleing and trying to fish.

Your cart will support the PA-12 "just fine"!
With the locking wheels, hopefully the cart will not scoot away, as you are loading the PA, if it's on the ground and you don't have anyone else to help you lift/load it.

Something I'd keep an eye on with this type of system is sagging on the sides of the Pro Angler. With the supports down the center, there is a good amount of weight on the outside and overtime, and you may see some deck distortion. You could measure the distance between the hull and the wood stand and see if it changes after a week or two, but some foam blocks or something like that on the frame would probably help take some of that load up.

Congratulations on the new boat! Hope to see some on the water photos before too much longer.

Thanks Brendan, I will keep an eye out for that. Can't wait for it to warm up, at least get back to the 50's and some sun and I am hitting the water!

Brendan, one more thing, has Hobie seen any issues with this type of storage/transport? I got the idea off these forums as many people have built similar using 3-4" PVC on their trailers\carts.

Any additional input would be appreciated, I know this has come up a bunch!

Thanks for this! Drawing up some plans for my storage cart now.
My plan is to make the cart around 8' long x 34" wide with 3" pvc
Temporarily attach the 8' upper 2x4 runners down about midways to keep the legs from towing inward with the weight of the yak on top.
Once i see where the sides settle, move the carpeted horizontal runners back up just touching the bottom of the yak to prevent any sagging.
Might have an even better idea but i'm still thinking it through.
I will know more when i actually start building it...right now its resting on 8 pillows...lol

Here is a link to what I used as a pattern, made the top a bit different using the PVC and got total height right at my tacoma truck bed for easy on and off.

I don't do much woodwork and didn't have a table saw, but it ended up pretty square.

Ended up with the following:

5 - 50" 2x4
4 - 30 1/2" 2x4
4 - 23 1/2" 4x4
4 - casters (5 1/2" tall) 2 with wheel locks
1 - 10' 3" OD PVC, cut in half
9 - 30" 1 1/2" strips for underneath storage
