Really want to know why it was designed this way. Kayaks flip, then you lose everything in your crate. Why no top?

I looked at them last weekend when visiting my local Hobie dealer. They are well made and offer the ability to attach the H-rail accessories on all 4 side. It's the H-rail design that prevents having a top as you have to be able to attach items to those rails. I would think a nice mesh netting that could be hooked across the top would satisfy the lid requirement. I use a YakAttack Blackpak which does have a lid.

I know. I'm about to buy the Blackpak myself, but if the crate had a top I would be buying that. I just don'y understand who designed it without a top. Do they Kayak and fish?

Yes... of course. Not everybody wants a top and not everybody kayaks in conditions that they are likely to flip and dump the crate contents. Milk crates don't have tops either. It limits what you can stack in there. In the cases where you would like a top, we have designed a mesh cover with a zipper access. The rails will be above that.

Not yet available, but coming.

I have not seen that. Is it on the Hobie site? My dealer does not have it or know about it.

I prefer a cooler to a crate, but then I keep most everything in a soft tackle bag then in the cooler. That way I can use the cooler to hold fish (rarely) and set the tackle bag on top should that situation arise. I made a bracket from 1.25" PVC to hold the cooler in place on the rear deck, with a few rod/net/tool holders incorporated. Rod holders could also be attached to the cooler if you prefer. Bungie cords also secure the cooler to the kayak, in event of a mishap.

The great thing about this hobby is that there are so many different ways to rig a kayak. It sounds like your setup works just fine for you. :D
