I'm new to the hobie family and recently I had the opportunity to own a basically new 2015 PA-12 for an amazing deal so I did not pass up the chance to own it. So here's the issue. I'm unfamiliar with hobies and so I decided to takeit out to my local harbor a few times to adjust from paddling to peddling. And had no issues. So now I decided since I'm a bit more comfortable with it now I decide to launch it out from one of my local beach. I had no issues getting past the small waves and it was beautifully calm water after I got out in the open water. Then the issue started. While sitting I made a slight adjustment to the right and the kayak rolled quick too. I chalked it up to user error and got the kayak right side up and got back in it. Then no later than 3 min go by when the Same thing happens again. At this point I'm thinking some this up. It shouldn't be rolling so easily. The only thing I could thing of was that the prior owner was about 90lbs heavier than me and I'm about 190lbs and he had added extra foam in the hull for more buoyancy and me being lighter than him is throwing off the center gravity and causing the kayak to roll easily. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

Check the seat position. In the high position it will be less stable, but still VERY stable compared to most kayaks. Lower the seat. Foam inside the hull is a safety device to prevent the hull from fully sinking if the hull is breached. |

Foam blocks inside the hull do not increase buoyancy - the displacement comes from the hull volume. So unless you fill the interior of the hull with water, they are a non-issue in terms of throwing anything off. My guess is that you just aren't used to the boat, yet. |

When you say the kayak rolled, you mean you turtled it?! With the PAs if you are pedaling fast and hit the rudder abruptly you will definitely feel the kayak sway, drastically more so in te high position of the seat. But even with my livewell full, seat high position, pedaling at a good clip, I have jammed the rudder pretty hard and never felt in danger of flipping on my 2015 PA14.Did you have any water in the hull? |
