I just got one of these since dragging the Frabil Flow control bucket feels like towing a sea anchor. Haven't tried it out yet...waiting for the water to warm up a bit. $29.

I tried pulling a minnow bucket behind my Pro Angler 12 with bad results. So has anyone tried towing a small Bait Tube for minnows and if so how did the kayak steer? |

I built one out of a 3" piece of PVC with a shower drain on one end and an end cap on the other. There is a little drag, but it isn't terrible. The main issue is it can get wrapped around the rudder or mirage drive and that can be a major pain to try and untangle when your in unstable water.  Just Google PVC bait tube and you'll find a million different ways to build them. |

Yes I envisioned having difficulty trailing the tube and how to retrieve it without getting it tangled in the router. I think there may be a way to do this with a second rope and possibly eyelets to keep the line from going under the boat on a sharp turn. Before I tackle the trailing and retrieving of the tube I want to make sure I won't have bad drag problems. The purchased bait tube might possibly have less drag that's what I am banking on at this point. Waiting on the results from Patroit to make my next move. |

Bob G....Tried it out today in saltwater. As I hoped, there was Significantly less drag than the Frabil trolling bait bucket I had been using. At a casual peddling speed (one pedal stroked forward every 2 seconds), speed reduced from 4.3 mph to to 3.7 mph as measured with my GPS. With the pedals removed & the Evolve motor inserted, I didn't notice any difference at all. At a stop, the bait tube floated just at or just below the surface. While moving forward, the bait bucket submerged itself. It was a little nose heavy, and that may be a positive...keeps the water flowing fresh. I had about a 10 foot tether trailing behind me secured to the handrail beside the seat. Moving backwards, I pulled the bucket in beside the kayak to prevent fouling the pedals or the motor propeller. I'm sold on this as a better solution to the Frabil design for kayak use. |
