Hello everyone,

Quick question, what is the best marine grease to put into the mirage drive when I take it apart to clean/service, anyone have any suggestions?

I use Evinrude Johnson Triple-Guard grease for wheel bearings.....just because I have this for my trailer.
The good news is it won't wash out...it's blue in color, and you can easily see it as compared to the amber color grease.

I believe any good quality marine wheel bearing grease will work just fine.

I wear cheap, throw away, nitrile examination gloves from Costco to keep my hands clean.

Don't mean to derail the discussion on grease, but Doc, how far do you have to strip things down to get the grease in? After reading about difficulties getting roller bearings and spindles back in place on the drive shaft, I was wondering if a partial strip down could be done and then squirt grease into the bearings using a 20 cc syringe and 18 gauge hypodermic needle?

Jim_MI I suppose you could do a partial grease job, but IMHO its not all that hard to take out the bearings, really clean the parts and then re-grease everything.
The Evinrude grease is really tacky and makes a mess, but using a foam ear plug in the ID, as Hobie shows, makes reassembly a snap over the axle shaft.

If you tried to inject the grease as you suggested, I would use a regular grease gun since the grease is very heavy.

We recommend lite oils and this can me done without taking it apart. Grease collects grit.

Best stuff is the Hobie Multi Lube.

Hi Matt,

When did Hobie make this change as Hobie was using an amber colored marine grease early on ???
This is the first time I have seen this recommendation.

I have not had any issues with grit/stuff collecting in my GT Conversion Mirage Drive.....maybe its because I don't beach my PA-14 with the MD installed and fish only in fresh water.
