Post subject:  Transporting a 12' PA?

My normal fishing platform is a 21' boat but it's impossible to take with us when going camping and pulling our travel trailer. I'm seriously thinking of buying a 12' PA to take on these occasions but transportation is still a challenge.

I pull the trailer with a 3/4 ton p/u with 8' bed that has a fiberglass canopy. There wouldn't be enough room to leave the tailgate down and lay the kayak flat in the bed. I'd have to do more research, but it seems like it might be possible to put it in the bed but raise the tailgate and have the boat stick out just below the top of the canopy (and thereby miss the trailer hitch and propane tanks). Has anyone else done this? Would it over stress the boat with the only contact points being in the front and where it rests on the edge of the tailgate? The only other option I can think of is to somehow put the boat on top of the canopy but I'm sure the canopy wasn't engineered to take that kind of weight.

I image that I'm not the first person to face this dilemma. Are there other ideas out there?
