Post subject: | Rudder raising issue |
Hello. Fresh back from a great saltwater fishing trip in the Louisiana marsh in my 2016 Hobie PA12. While fishing, I raised the rudder (or thought I did). When I went to lower the rudder, I pulled the T-Handle clearing the cleats and nothing happened, the line wasn't pulled into the hull like it normally does when the rudder is lowered. I reached back and felt the rudder, and it was still in the down position. It steered fine, no problems with the steering mechanism (so the good news is I was able to continue fishing safely). Now that I am back at the house, I searched this website but couldn't find a similar issue. Did some more research using this forum and the hobie parts catalogue, and learned that there is a "cheek block" inside the hull forward of the T handle assembly. Used my cell phone to video the inside of the hull to investigate, and I am able to see the cheek block hanging by the pull ropes and no longer attached to the hull. I can't find a detailed diagram anywhere......where does it attache, and how to I reassemble it? What parts do I need? A lock nut or something like that? Any help and/or advice is greatly appreciated ![]() MillYak |

The block attaches forward to another line that dead-ends to the front hatch - there's a fitting that it's tied to. You'll just need to re-attach the line. Not sure what happened - that's a weird one. |

Thank you Jacques. I did see that cable laying in the hull. Will give it a try this weekend. Appreciate the fast response!! |

Just in case someone else experiences this same issue, I thought I would post that Jacques was 100% correct. The chord that connects the cheek block to the inside front of the kayak had somehow slipped off of the molded plastic keeper. I haven't tested it in the water yet, but the rudder is raising and lowering properly in my shop. Thank you Jacques ![]() |
