There's tons of info on motorizing kayak on the net. Lots of info on here too. A lot depends on your budget and what type of fishing you do (what waters you fish in). If you're looking at a $150 trolling motor and a $100 lead acid battery to me a side mount would be easier than a rear mount or in some cases a Mirage drive mount. You can use the battery to help offset the weight of the trolling motor hanging off the side of the kayak. If you ever get into areas with a lot of grass, vegetation, stumps or shallow marsh areas I personally would prefer a rear mount so I could still have the Mirage drive when necessary. I've been down the "adding a trolling motor to a kayak" road. Spent a lot of time rigging the trolling motor on the back of the kayak and lugging around a 60 lb. battery. It worked fine just got tired of having to deal with the extra luggage and weight. No way I will go down that road again unless I go with a stronger motor and lithium battery combination like Torqeedo or Bixpy. |
