So I know a lot is personal preference but what are some recommend fishfinders for the PA12? New to the Hobie world and I would like to start setting my kayak up. Thanks |

Welcome to the Hobie family! You'll get a lot of different opinions here. It depends on how and where you fish, your budget and battery. Personally I have a Lowrance Hook 2 5 with down scan and it's just OK but the customer service at Lowrance is horrible. I rarely use the word never (because never is a long time) but it will be a long long time before I buy another Lowrance product. I've recently been doing a lot research on fish finders. I'm either upgrading my Hook 5 on my PA 14 or getting a new (to me) secondary kayak and adding a FF to that. If the transducer will fit in the molded in transducer pocket under the hull on a 2015 or 2016 Hobie I will go with a Raymarine Dragonfly 5PRO. IMO the best clarity and detail. Hummingbirds are really good too. Based on the research I've done and the feedback I've heard from watching video reviews I would say Hummingbird and Garmin are near the top with Hummingbird having the best side scan clarity. Followed by Raymarine then Lowrance. As far as down scan vs. side scan if you have the means I would say get a side scan unit. Keep in mind these usually take more power and require a solid battery (the FPV Power 17.5 is a really solid little battery and only weighs 2 lbs.). Kayak fishing is challenging enough so having the ability to see what is on either side of you in addition to below you is a big advantage in my opinion. |
