Post subject: | PA12 360 2020: can't raise rudder with the pull |
For some reason, I can't raise the rudder with the pull cord. if I use something to prop up the rudder to the up position, I can pull the cord easily, cleat it and it stays up as normal. I can release it, and it drops normally. The only way to get it up again is the manually raise the rudder from behind the kayak, and then cleat it. Checking the rudder up/down line there appears to be nothing binding the cables inside the hull itself, ( as evidenced by being able to easily cleat it after manually raising the rudder, and easily lowering it ). Removing the the cover over the steering cam, I can see where the cable is wearing a grove at the hole that drops down to the rudder itself and that seems to be where is binding. I can manually pull it rudder up from the top, but if I let the cord sit in the grove, it binds. Can't seem to post a picture I took of it, but the wear look very much like this post: https://www.hobie.com/forums/viewtopic. ... 97#p252382 I've got a couple months left on warranty and my dealer is no longer a Hobie dealer, so I need some ideas. Thanks Dave F. |

Most commonly when the rudder does not retract it's due to a broken or worn out bungee. This part can be replaced and fastened to the line with a hog ring. The hog ring will be fastened between the knot in the rudder line and the knot on the end of the bungee. Another culprit can be a bent tube where the rudder line enters the hull - this would need to be replaced. It's also possible that the rudder line is being caught on the foam blocks inside the hull. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
