I purchased a PA 360 14' a few weeks ago and have taken it out a few times. I can't for the life of me get it to go straight without the rudder or skeg down. I've watched all of the adjustment videos and followed the instructions. I am just trying to understand if this is just to be expected or not? Thanks in advance for any help! |

The PA needs the rudder to keep it heading in the direction you wish to go. Hobie added the skeg to improve the rudder answering the helm position/steering. I have a 2013 PA-14 since new and I changed the standard rudder to the sailing rudder in order to improve tracking while I down rig fish. W/O the larger rudder, the PA would crab to the side the down rigger hardware was deployed on. So, if you want a kayak to track straight W/O a rudder, the PA is not the right choice

None of the Hobie kayaks are designed to track in a straight line unless the rudder is down. For example, I have a 13' Revolution, which is a moderately long and narrow kayak, and if I pedal it with the rudder up, it'll spin out of control. I also have a 12' PA 360, and it also won't track without its rudder and/or the skeg down, although with both up you could try to keep a 360 going in a straight line by constantly correcting with the 360 drive. The 360 turns very responsively in response to the rudder, and lowering the skeg will help you go in a straight line, so I'm surprised that you tried to pedal your 360 with both the rudder and the skeg up. How did you expect to steer the kayak with the rudder up? |
