To Matt Miller,

At this point Hobie Cat Co in March has excepted my order for a Med Blue Mesh Tramp for my H18 ... as was listed in the catalog ... after a month Hobie informed me thru Murray's that they wouldn't make a med blue tramp. Hobie makes med blue mesh tramps for the Wave, Getaway and H16 as listed in the current catalog... why not the H18? So HobieCat Co asked if I would take a grey mesh tramp instead ... reluctently I agreed to a Grey Mesh Tramp and Hobie Cat Co excepted the order .... Now I've been informed that Hobie Cat Co will not make a Grey Mesh Tramp for me.

WHAT'S UP .... DOESN"T HOBIE CAT CO WANT MY BUSINESS????? At this point you have gotten my "IRISH" up!!!! (and that's not a good thing!!!! for you or me)

Now when I ordered my new set of sails + extra jib in Oct 06' I was given a delivery date of November ..... I receieved them in late Feb/early March 07'. I do like the sails but they were shipped to me 3 months late!!!! Now I've ordered a tramp .... 4 months later NO TRAMP!!!! I do race in "Hobie Points Regettas" under one-design rules.

Now on my P19 I have a "Sunrise Yacht Products" tramp ... their pricing is cheaper ... their design is better ....they will make the color I wish .... and they deliver on time!!!!! Should I place an order with them???? And what do I tell the Protest Commitee when I get DSQ'd ...... Hobie will not make the tramp they agreed to make me .... not once but twice!!!!

At this point I want the MEDIUM BLUE MESH TRAMP Hobie Cat Co agreed to make in March!!!!

This isn't Matt Miller, but hobie no longer makes parts for the H18 ever since discontinuing the line. Any parts you're getting from hobie cat co. are leftover parts from when they were in production. I know for a fact that there are no hulls left in stock on one side (either port or starboard) and there's only one left of the other. I don't presume to know why hobie is being so late on their responses to you, but I'm just telling you what I know.

Not necessarily true. Tramps and other "soft goods" like sails tend to be available - but on their production schedule, which can be very sporadic.

The first mistake is ordering through Murrays. They are not a Hobie Dealer, so delays and unavailablity is possible. They have to order Hobie parts from an authorized Hobie dealer. This will cause further delays and confusion. They may show things in their catalog that we no longer make.

As per the 2008-09 Hobie Parts catalog Hobie 18 tramps are offered in:

White, Black and Turquoise only. White and Turquiose are on the shelf. There are no back orders for Hobie 18 trampolines.

We don't make tramps for all models of boats in all colors simply due to the lower sales volume of some boats. I thinned out the offerings on the 18 this year. We make trampolines in batches and do not offer to make one off trampolines in custom color.

Discussions about the quality of the Hobie made trampoline product are all over the forums. They are proven to be better products.

Yes, we do make most (if not all) Hobie 18 parts still. We are NOT relying on left over inventory as suggested by one user here.

Not ordering through your local Hobie Representitive (or even A Hobie Representitive), then griping to the factory about a delay???

If they suck, or you don't get along with them, or whatever, there are others of us that do our best and put in the effort to get you parts. Sometimes it doesn't work out, but we try. I'll freaking drive there and build it myself if it comes down to it. Although, last time, I tried to help at the factory I hopped on the forklift and proceeded to run down a couple of kayaks, so maybe it's not a good idea.

If I knew that the majority of the sailors in my area bought parts from me and not West Marine, and Ebay, and Murray's and whoever else, I would stock about 10 times more stuff. Take the Hobie catalog into your local West Marine, stand in the shackle isle and compare prices, oftentimes we're less expensive. Then go back to the line rack and do the same. Then call us (dealers) when your sewn, aftermarket tramp starts busting at the seams in 2 years and get a Hobie tramp for a hundred bucks more that will last 20.

Your aftermarket squaretop main needs battens and it doesn't fill at the top? Don't call me. I have no idea the length of your #3 batten nor how much to taper it and where. And I don't know how to tune it with the downhaul either, I don't have the experience with it. But if you buy a stock Hobie sail, I have the data to support you. And...if you bought it from me. You can bet your a** , I'll walk out onto the beach and help you tune it in. Most of the time I could walk you through how to tune it over the phone as you set up at the launch ramp. Your local rep has leverage, and often times experience to help you out.

Guys,

You missed the point .... I do now Jack Ott at Clews & Strawbridge ... I've spent alot of $$$$$ there over the years ... it has more to do w/ 7%sales tax plus time and gas to go over to Malvern

Also Murray's has come thru for me more then once when I ordered parts Monday that I needed by Weds to fix the boat and leave for a regetta on Thur's night. That is called "Customer Service" and for years they donated products to our raffles , Ok. It also occurs to me since Murray's has to order through a "Hobie Dealer" some Hobie dealer still gets the sale!!!!

My boat is a H18 mag manufactured in 1984 .... the boat origonally came w/ Blue Hawaii Sails ... med blue tramp ... has med blue wing covers ... med blue bungie .... med blue neoprene anti-skid gunwales ... blue sheetlines ... and currently has white sails w/med blue sail numbers .... do you see a pattern?????


Now Hobie Cat Co make med blue tramps for the Getaway, Bravo, H16 .... so this tells me that they have the material availible. The pattern doesn't change w/ color ... so how hard is it to walk over and get the med blue bolt of material vs the "Turquoise".

Oh, White is too hard to keep clean .... I've had black (on my P19 and didn't like it, it got hot) .... and the Turquoise is actually NEON Blue .... and I DO NOT do neon colors at all!!!!! It clashs horribly w/ med blue also.

So what am I to do? Order a Turquoise Tramp and have to redo my whole boat's color scheme into a color I find offensive ... and Hobie doesn't make (old style) Magnum Wing covers anymore also .... so I'm still SOL ....

It's called "CUSTOMER"S SERVICE" ... I am the customer ... the money is in my pocket ..... I choose how and where I spend it!!!!

Now Matt, Thank You for your reply but be careful .... I've been around a long time ... my boat has 84' "Red Foam" serial #'s on 87' replacement hulls .... I am good friends w/ Danial Flannigan and was along side of him when his new H16 port hull failed ..... I am also good friend w/ Jimmy Glanden .... can you explain why one hull on his new H16 is 1 1/2" longer then the other and how about his rudders ....

A word of advice from a HARD-_SS, Hobie Cat Co has little margin currently in the quality department .... some Customer Service would help your reputation greatly

FYI: I can get a tramp in the color I want it, w/(1)wk delivery at 1/2 your price ..... if it lasts only 1/2 as long do I really loose anything ... are "Hobie Points Regetta's" that important to me? ..... I want to go to the H18 NA's next year .... But I'm 1/2 Scotch Irish, 1/2 German and all HARD HEADED ... I don't like to be told something is not possible just because .....

Sorry Harry... can't do it.

Customer service is one thing, but keeping a reasonable number of options available is another.

I can not make just one tramp from a color we are not stocking. Tramps are made by-the-roll of material. They cut the pieces in bulk. We also have to keep the special orders to a minimum in our loft as they are not actually keeping up with demand as it is. We have to draw the line somewhere and I drew that line last winter when I did the catalog.

I don't really "get" the references to the other boat issues and what that has to do with this, but each reasonable issue is handled by us as is Jim Glanden's. That boat, like so many others, is not a perfect match from left to right. Remember... these boat molds were shaped by hand about 40 years ago and each boat is a little different due to dozens of possible varience points.
