Post subject:  new to me 18

Good morning to all. I thought i would introduce myself since this forum was a huge help in setting up my new to me 18. I think it's a 1982 due to this ser# CCMH6889M82E. I had a H16 growing up and man is the 18 alot different to setup. It took me a few hours to figure out the headstay/ruller furling set-up alone but thanks to this forum and the support page i THINK i figured it out. Well wish me luck on the maiden voyage tomorrow. Hopefully i won't push it to much and flip it because it sounds like its a lot tougher to right.

Post subject:  righting an H18

Thats a MISNOMER .... I find righting the H18 easier then the H16 .... I keep falling/sliding off a H16 with the curved hulls.

You can stand on the daggerboards ... that gives you more leverage ... after that all the same rules apply ....

Wait until you drive her hard enough to put the bows under .... keep you wieght aft ... pop/ease the jib and/or mainsails ... up the bows will come ....

Years ago I was racing at the "Wildwood Classic" as a H18mag .... it was blowwing HARD .... "B" & "C" Fleets stayed on the beach that day .... we were single-trapped beating up-wind .... I was motoring through the H16"A" Fleet .... as I passed between two H16's We went THROUGH a +8ft wave ... not over but through!!! spray went everywhere as we took the top four feet of the wave off ... both H16 crews looked over in amazement expecting us to pitchpole .... I easied the mainsheet maybe 6", then resheeted .... turning the afterburners ON and was GONE!!!!!

A well sailed H16 in flat water can keep up with a H18 .... but when it is lumpy/bumpy you will really enjoy the H18 !!!

You may wish to try and find a set of Magnum Wings for the boat ... they don't make it really much if any faster but the boat takes on a whole different character ... a BIGGER character

WELCOME TO THE H18 FLEET

Well i took the boat out for the first time last week and all i can say is... WOW!! I can't believe how different it is than the 16 i use to sail. Cuts through 2' chop like it was nothing, seemed alot drier and seemed to tack much quicker. Unfortunatly i blew out the jib which i expected since it was left furled and outside for 6 years. No going back to the 16 for me.
