Like today.

Had a couple come in yesterday asking questions and telling me about this $300 H-16 they want to buy. I nod my head and warn them about delam, thinking they'll be back with that dog shortly.

They drive in today with their $300 16. I thump the hulls, check the wires and give it the general once over.

Then I offer them $1000 on the spot. They turn me down.

It's just as well. I'd have felt like an ass if they'd said yes.

They've got a 1988 that has the normal flaws for a boat that's probably sat outside most of its life. But it's solid. Brick outhouse solid. Sails are crisp and mostly clean, save a bit of dirt from poor storage. Tramp will last them a year. The rest is just preventative maintenance. They drop less than $500 in the store replacing the rotted lines and getting spare pins and such, along with a 3-pack of high end life vests.

Even if they replace the tramp on Monday, they'll have half of what the boat is worth invested in it.

So yeah... It happens. Cheap boats that are killer deals, and will provide years of fun.

All you dreamers take note. It could happen to you.

Anyone heard about a $300 H-17?

Brian,

So you hate the customers or you are jealous of the fact that they got a killer deal?

They'll be back and spend some more money with you, just like the rest of us in DFW do!

Using Boolean logic, the answer is "Yes".

(the latter - like you really had to ask)

I'm already working too hard. How can I get you guys to quit breaking stuff? I really am in desperate need of a sailing vacation!!!!

And if that's you, Marvin. Quit dropping parts overboard, even it if means saving the beer.

Yikes! I spent 1500 for the same boat.........in that mine is in very similar shape as you describe and an 88 or 89 Corpus Christi Nationals boat. I can never find deals like that.

I got a H16 for free at the start of the summer. I paid $100 for the H16 I am currently sailing. My previous boat was a Prindle 18 I bought for $350. Two of these boats came with trailers and cat trax. All three were from aging sailors who just wanted to get them out of their back yards. "Aging sailor" being a relative term as I am 57.

Awww, Dog, don't be a Hater...

And I thought we were all friends.

I'm trying to send a pic to show you how much fun we had the day after we met you at Mariner Sails. We drove up to Lake Lewisville and visited Hobie Point. We love our new boat; she's a beauty! We were fortunate to have very light winds for our first outing. We had a great time & even met some nice Hobiefolks (including Marvin, as he was in "search" mode. ha!)

Yep, we're the dreamers & it happened to us. Lucky ducks?

Now, if someone could help me figure out how to post this photo...

We will be as soon as I figure out how to steal your boat!

Next time you want parts, you better bring money and beer! Cause as cheap as you got off, I know you've got a wad of cash someplace.

Have fun.

Nice boat! (grumble, grumble, grumble....) I had very similar colors on mine. Here's a shot with the original sail:

Wish I still had one.

What? A 17, or one of those slow-ass, horizontal cut sails?

Here's to the best boat Hobie Cat ever made:

The 16 belonged to a guy who always had a nice view of my transoms. 240 was mine. That was a long time ago - 1986.

My buddy just sold his Hobie 18 (SX wings) for a profit and was offered a Shark on a trailer for ?? $500 I think. It was in a storage unit and was last registered in 83. I get to see it next week.

Sharks are pretty cool - the hotspot for them is Canandaigua, NY.

They pull a half-dozen out every Wednesday night and a bunch of them come out for the Canandaigua Multihull Open Regatta (photo is from a few years ago):
