I have lots of keel boat parts around, I used a telescoping mast support and some spare gudgeons and pintles. This allows the mast to be stored at a greater angle to slough snow and rain. It has proved valuable for me.

I prefer powerlines to whale oil and firewood. I hope the idea on how to use readily available sailing hardware to make winter storage better is useful. |

Storage is the by far my largest complaint about boat ownership. Mine is currently dissassembled and sitting in my basement for the winter. Semi reassembled of course

Personally w/ the mast down, I just fold the Magnum wings up on my H18 and tent the boat using a polypro tarp (12'x16') I do like the idea for a different reason though ... I could easily adjust the mast step hieght to clear my cap on my pick-up when I have the cap on my truck .... or maybe a RV???? Question: I'm looking to purchase this year a storage/travel cover for my H18 this year as the boat is taking a beating from the sun (and birdsh_t) down at the YC w/ the mast up ..... any recommendations??? |

When I bought my new 17 two years ago, I also purchased a pair of trailerable hull covers from Salty Dog. So far, I have been quite happy with them. They are made from sunbrella material, so they shouldn't fade, and overall the construction is quite good. They're pretty easy to install although they generally require a little lifting of the boat to get things lined up. My only real concern with them is that they are heavy dark blue, and in direct summer sunlight, they tend to build up a considerable amount of heat. Not a real problem for me as the boat is always stored in the shade and otherwise, I just open the cover tops. I've been told that the heat isn't an issue, but I prefer not to take the chance. sm |
