How do you dispose of old, and I mean beat up, sails? Yes, there's putting them in the dumpster and unloading them on someone else, but is there a creative way to recycle them?

every sailor should have a sewing machine, and I use my sewing machine to make all sorts of stuff out of used sails. I have a shower curtain, boat covers, hand bags, all sorts of stuff. The best way to go is to have sail numbers or logos integrated into the item you are making. Other wise, take the used sail sumwhere and have them make it.

I'm thinking, add a few extra grommets around the luff and leach of the sail, get a few canopy poles, steak that sucker down, and make an interesting shade area for those summertime parties. Ironically, the addition of wind may hinder this plan.

How about making burgees?

Recycle sails for trophies, or alternatives to t-shirts, for a regatta

There is a store in Annapolis, MD that only sells things made from old sails... clothes, bags, etc.. pretty cool and pricey stuff.

I'll take your old sails! I'm sure I can find a cool use for them!

Use them as an awning for your deck.

Humm lets see dacron underware, I think I'll pass thank you. You could make nice wind socks out of them and sell them to all the sailor guys with cabins at the lake so they can see wind direction.

You could make alot of small kites or a few large ones. The sails would literaly be flying.

In the Naked Turtle bar at Plattsburg NY they suspended an old sail from the ceiling. Looked great. Wife said no in our livingroom.

Put them in the scuppers and hose them over, not wait, that what to do with drunken sailors. How about making a cool sun shade tarp out of a couple colorful main sails sewn luff to luff. 8)

I got a really cool trophy at Midwinters East last year that was a wood frame cut out to look like a Hobie sail and an old sail glued into the back. It looks great in a window with the light coming through and it was a great idea. Thank you!
