Post subject:  Trifoiler internal pulley system in the base of the mast.

Anyone happen to know the layout of the pulley system inside the base of the masts used to trigger the release of the foil then pull up the foil.

One of my foil release systems is acting up.

Right now I can set the external connections (line lenghts etc) so I can release the foil lock reliable (pretty critical for beaching) but I will not be able to pull the foil has high as it should ELSE I can set up set it up to pull the foil up high enough but there will be too much tension on the foil lock and it will release unexpectantly during operation. I am am going to open it up over the winter But I wouldn't mind knowing the correct setup in case mine is not set up properly.

I believe it is something like the release line from the cockpit enters the mast wall at the base, goes upward to a 2 shieve block, down to the base of the mast to a 2 shieve block, up to the top block, down to the bottom and then out through the mast wall to the side of the foil. I'm guessing the top shieve must be fixed and the bottom shieve is attached via a line to the foil release mechanism. Consequently when the sailor first starts pulling the foil release line, the 2 blocks provide 3/1 force to open the foil release mechanism. Once it is open, all further pulling results in the foil being raised up (no pulley advantage).

Anyone know if this is correct ?

If I understand the problem correctly, the answer is very easily resolved. Put the system back to the original lengths. The blue line to the bridle on the foil is too long by about an inch.
The simple way to adjust is to simply put a half hitch knot in the line to shorten just a little bit. Add a second knot if the tip of the foil is still dragging on the ground. Keep the knots close to the foil so that it does not jam when going up into the mast section.
A better looking method is to retie the knot to the hook on the bridle making it shorter, then trim off the excess.
The objective is keep some slack in the black line to the locking hook. This keeps the foil from pre-releasing when on the weather side.
There is just enough room in the system to operate the foil remotely, but only when the lengths are nearly perfect.

Post subject:  re Trifoiler foil retract

You understand the problem. I have been tweeking the lengths for two years now but have yet to find the right combination. I need to be able to pull the foils basically at least just out of the water when beaching. The trifoiler is an older version and the internal lines have already been replaced at least once by previous owners so I have no idea if the line lengths are correct or even if the internal pulley system is set up correctly or there is a new design.. I am going to open up the mast section over the winter so it would be nice if I knew what the correct current setup and line lengths ahead of time when I go to inspect it.

It is so close to operating properly but I am going to damage the unit if I don't get it right soon either coming to the beach or when the foil releases accidently when sailing.

I don't know if you can email me directly from this forum, but please do if you can.

Thanks

Post subject:  Trifoiler foil retraction line internal pulley sys in mast

I got a really good reply to my above post with an attachment showing the (mast) internal pulley system, lines and line lengths, probably from Greg K. Unfortunately it has been lost due to a serious bug in our email archiving system. Any chance Greg or someone in Hobie could email me it again ?

PS. For some reason the search by author function doesn't work against my user id.
