Post subject: | Use one Hobie to Right Another? |
I had a little misadventure a few days ago. Went out sailing my H17 solo in very "light" wind. Another person from my fleet was also out soloing on his H17. Because the wind was nearly dead at launch, I made the mistake of not bringing my righting bag. The long and short of it is, of course, that we both individually capsized and both could not single handedly right our boats. The capsizes were at different times so each of us could "circle" the down boat but couldn't really do much to help. There are no motor boats allowed on the lake we were sailing on. In one of the instances (when I was capsized), my friend eventually pulled his boat up to mine, tied a line to my boat, dropped his main sail mid-lake, hopped on to my boat and pushed his boat away. We then righted my boat together. However, getting the mail sail back up mid lake (for him) was a major hassle. Hence the question: anybody tried tying the righting line from the capsized boat, to front cross beam a second helper boat ( located downwind). In our case, we had plenty of line so could have had a second boat fairly far off. Then the helper boat could possibly (?) back wind and help pull up the down boat. Is this crazy? Anyone got a better idea as to what to do when you're really in need of help w/o a motor boat around? thanks. |

It is very easy to right a hobie with another hobie I have done it many times. Have the skipper on the downed hobie get into position to right the boat, then sail around to the tip of the mast, do this by just coming into irons as you get to the mast tip. Then release your main and quickly grab the mast tip stand up with it get it up to your chest and toss it up as hard as you can and the boat will right, same procedure with any boat. |
