Post subject:  Northern Outer Banks NC question

We're heading out to the Manteo area this weekend and are looking for a good place to sail. We are relatively new to this, and our used boat is rather old, so I think the open ocean might be a bit ambitious. I was thinking about Stumpy Point.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a good put-in and place to sail? Any help would be appreciated.

Kitty Hawk bay is pretty good- there's a Wildlife Commission ramp in KDH- or c'mon down to HI... Canadian hole and the Hatteras pull off are pretty good, maybe a little better than an hour from Manteo.

Not sure if you were heading out the weekend your posted or this upcoming one.

In and around Nags Head...you can contact Kitty Hawk Water Sports...they are a Hobie dealer and might let you launch. Up near Duck, contact Nor'banks. I believe they will let you launch there as well.

On Hatteras Island, there are several day use facilities. One in Waves and the already Canadian Hole that will give you good access to the sound.

Good Luck!

KHWS website says somewhere (or maybe I saw it inside) that you can launch nonpowered for free.

Down in Rodanthe you can launch at the ferry slip. I've done that for the last few years. Also there is the New Inlet ramp a few miles north, but the water is very shallow for a very long time leaving New Inlet. We left there a few years ago heading up to Oregon Inlet and I swear we couldn't put the rudders down for an hour.
