I already posted this question in the H16 forum, but got very few replies! So i'd like get some more data: My friends and I are going down .. south somewhere this Thanksgiving break (we're High schoolers) our 3 options are, Corpus Christi, San Fransisco, or San Diego. Can ya'll tell me about the sailing there at the time of the year, and things to do besides sailing... We'll be driving from Denver, so it's all about equi distance. We also have 3/2 mm wetsuits for the cold Any info would be awesome!

San Fransisco is not known for warm temps any time of year, so you may want to do like the birds and head south for warmer climes in November. Anything south of point conception on the west coast has warmer water temps, and San Diego has pretty nice weather year round. I dont have that much experience with Texas weather. And that is my $0.02 Chad

I went to Port Aransas, (which is out on Mustang Island near Corpus), and had some really good sailing. The water was warm, and we got lucky with the weather, it was in the mid 80's, upper 70's the two weeks we were down there in February 05'. It was pretty dead that time of year too. Wasn't hardly anyone on the beach. Prices in town weren't outrageous in the off season. Some of the best sailing I've ever had.

SAN DIEGO. In SD you get to sail in mission bay or in san diego bay, or the ocean. Some lakes but they are lame. Weather is bomb,

bassie1234567 -The weather in San Diego around Thanksgiving should be okay - Just not great. If you come here you'll want to stay at Campland on Mission Bay (www.campland.com). If one of you has a parent in the military check out Fiddlers Cove Marina on San Diego Bay. If you have cat wheels you should consider going to San Felipe. They have extreme high and low tides, but great weather and sailing. Check with Rick Buchanan about the weather and amenities at San Felipe and Puerto Penasco that time of year. ([email protected]) Northern CA - I'd stay away from the coast, but contact Richard Vilvins ([email protected]) or Jeremy at Surf City Catamarans about the weather at Clear Lake (Will-O-Point Campground) and Whiskeytown Lake (Oak Bottom Campground) The sailing is great and both are large and beautiful lakes. Another option is to come to Southern CA without your boat and be a tourist: Sea World, Hollywood (get free tickets to be on a TV show),Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm, Legoland, Santa Monica.... I went to college in Houston, TX years ago and my wife and I went to Corpus Christi for about an hour a few years ago. I wouldn't want to spend a week there or even several hours. San Diego; Inland Northern CA; Baja, Mexico on the Sea of Cortez; Tourist in Southern Ca......Four very good choices for Thanksgiving break. I hope this helps! Best of luck to all of you! Richard

San Diego = EXPENSIVE Go just a little past Corpus to South Padre Island, Spring Break Capitol of Texas. Warm Water good wind and a LOT less expensive. If you DO decide to go to CA, DO NOT Speed !!!!! When I went to San Diego for the 40th Anniversary Regatta in October last year, I got a ticket for 10 miles over the limit, cost me THREE HUNDRED AND SIXTY BUCKS. I thought they were trying to get me to help them balance the budget Nuff said ! !

Hats off to Port Aransas. Wind and more wind. So much wind they are building a wind farm not to far away. You can drive on the beach here. If you go a few miles down the beach from Port Aransas you can drive right into the surf. You have your choice of ocean surf or bay. It will be off season there so the hotel rates are much lower. Plenty of dophins in the bays to keep you company. The main business in Port Aransas is sport fishing so plenty of seafood to eat. I have sailed out to some of the oil platforms five miles out. With in five years there will be wind turbines about eight miles out. One word of caution, I would stay in the bays if there is a northern front coming through. The wind blows hard straight out to sea.

If you're looking to sail don't come to SF at that time of year. It's cold and there's no wind unless a rain storm is blowing in. SF also isn't that great if you're not drinking of age and looking for fun. I know zip about Texas, but every time I go to San Diego I wonder why I'm not living there. Winds in SD are lighter than SF but the weather is way warmer.

If you can drive all the way to San Diego, why not Long Beach?? It's usually pretty good sailing plus, there's a regatta here on the 21st & 22nd. (Turkey Day Regatta) There's bay sailing or open ocean sailing as well and it's a hundred miles closer that San Diego from where you're coming from.

Yea, David gets my vote. Go to Long Beach and you can hang out in Huntington Beach too (only 15 min south). LOTS to do and see (females your age....) and sail too, I guess.

Hey Steve... You gota watch those CHiP's. They will get you for 10 over. Don't be in the fast lane with a trailer either...another huge dollar ticket. I drove from CA to Michigan for the H17 NA's in '96. Drove there and back with an expired trailer registration tag (left new one at home by mistake). After almost 5000 miles without incident, got stopped twice within 100 miles of home by the CHP and was issued a fixit ticket. Do not under-estimate their keen eyes (and radar too!) bassie1234567... SoCal for sure...hands down. Later, JB

Just so that you know JB, there are only two radar units in the entire state of California. I.E., they don't use radar. They trace you, meaning they follow you from a distance and match their speed with yours. Also, all trailers have to travel in the slow lane at a speed not to exceed 55mph. They are usually pretty lenient but don't make violations obvious or they WILL roll up on ya. Now, as far as registrations & seatbelts go, that's an absolute bust. Other than that, anyone coming to California should enjoy their trip.
