Post subject:  The Dark Side?

So, as i browse the internet reading up on sailing etc (most recently researching the wild cat) i started to notice that a lot of monohull sailors say that people are "going to the dark side" when they start to sail cats. What the heck is that about? Any monohull sailors here that can shed some light?

Cat sailing is more on the X Games side of the sport...extreme/fast/physical sailing compared to sedate monoslugs :P . That is where the "dark side" comments (all in jest  ) are coming from. Don't know if too many monohull sailors are browsing a catamaran forum but we all know that the sailing world revolves around cats. You either sail a cat, half a cat or a cat and a half  I know who is having more fun (our little secret)...why else are you seeing monohull sailors defecting to the "dark side"  .

Master Yoda (aka MBounds) care to chime in?

I have both and I like the "dark side".I sail my 40 ft.(ferro cement) major mono slug on Georgian Bay up here in Canada. It's ok,But I live for my H16.All home projects come to a grinding halt when I feel the need for speed. There is nothing to compare when your out on the wire! That's why I bought my Hobie 4 years ago.

Jbhawaii,

To use a quote from Lord Vader- "You don't know the POWER of the Dark Side!" It's all in fun, once you have sailed a Hobie you either get it...or you don't. I have said in the past that Hobie cat sailors are a special breed, it's in our blood. Also with the speed factor and physical effort needed to sail them, there is a real commitment to cat sailing. Everything on a Hobie happens in fast forward. Another great quote I think of before sailing is from Master Yoda...."Do or do not..there is no try" :D Take care and Have a Hobie day!

I have owned a mono, it was great!!! Just think all the Hobie guys are at home when the weather is cold and i am out sailing!! So as a result many of my Hobie friends wanted to sail the mono and loved it !! Now as to the physical aspect of sailing a cat opposed to a mono, well you better do some home work cause many monos require MORE athleticism than a Hobie. Many sailing mono snobs do not like muti hulls cause they are faster, and they are usually referring to racing, and they do not like to mix multis with monos. i took great pleasure in watching the 88 Americas cup , the big cat kicked ass, and I believe a Hobie factory guy or two was involved. A couple years ago some folks from Div 5 had a Corsair 27 and destroyed it on Lake Mac. in Nebraska. They were in big wind competing in the long distance race and threw the chute and just destroyed the boat. They were stupid. A lot of those guys from that race said the corsair sucked but really it was operator error. The same Hobie folks said to me why would you want a boat that fast any way, all you can do is blast back and forth on the lake real fast. So I say try all sailing .In my opinion all sailing is fun all sailboats are cool . It just depends on what you like; but try it out. By the way I sold my Mac 25 cause i found that One day of big wind on the Hobie equaled 30 days on the mono. Also in the fall when we sailed the mono in cold weather was not as much fun as, Bird Hunting with my Golden.

I sail big boat too and have started grinding on a 38' racing mono out here in hawaii as well as sailing my cat. In its way its fun too, those big boat boats less than 5 feet from each other is a rush but as for speed and pure adrenaline, nothing beats a cat

I sail on the 43' mono for vacations.. it's smooth, fun and a "go somewhere" type of situation.

The cat is for tooling around... although I'd like to start taking it places just to say that I have. :)

Hey robber-
Do you know my cousin Peter Tietz? He lives up in Canada and sails the Georgian Bay in a monohull. I think he was working at a windvane company for sailboats.

We have a 26' mono hull and love it. It's got a bathroom and a kitchen and sleeps the 4 of us with room to spare. We spent all labor day weekend on the water. It was great.

Our favorite times though are when we have her heeled over on her side, with the rails dipping in the water. We love sailing her. Live for sailing her actually.

None of us have been on a Hobie Cat before. So when we get some sails for the 21SE we just bought, we'll be running to the water :)

My wife is almost as into sailing as I am, which is great. As a matter of fact, she holds the current speed record for our mono hull (between us anyway).
