In over fifteen years of trying to rent Hobie's, may I share with you that Waves and Getaways are 'usual', and Hobie 16's are 'unusual'. Some Caribbean resorts run a very nice H15 (out of Europe). Hobie 18's or Tigers etc, you'll have to go private. At the South end of the Ft L beach, a guy rents Waves and one or two Getaways, some in dubious condition. If you have the time, scoot up I95 to Delray Beach, south end Chuck's rents out Waves and Getaways, nice operation. At the north end, look out for Elias, aka Mr. Catamaran of Delray, he may be able to set you up with a private rental. A tall guy called John used to rent a H16 and a Getaway on Pompano Beach, however the last four times I tried to rent, 'the wind was too strong/weak, the surf was too high/low' and I figured out he made more money in 1/2 hour from jet skis than he did in a day of renting cats. Or go south, to the Rickenbacker Causeway, Miami, great operator there, google it and then Google Map it, you can see the Waves and Getaways on the Beach. On the Islands, the only place you'll likely find Hobies is at a Resort - whatchwannado? Check into the resort for the day so you can rent a Hobie? Anyone one know of any rental operators out there? Hank McD, who do you sell to that might rent? |

The Breezes resort in Nassau have a couple H16. You can negotiate prices with the guy in charge. The condition of the H-16 are fair. These boats do not have trapezes. But the wind was awesome, steady and consistent around 15 kn. makes for great fast sailing. We stayed at the Wyndham resort (next door) I walked over and chatted with the guy and got it for $50/hr. Took it for 2 hrs. but it was more like 3 hrs. He didn't care because most tourists only wanted to go for a short ride on the wave and no one uses the H-16. btw... He likes US cash ![]() |

Don't forget to take a set of rudder cams with you (brad at sunjammers advice) as all the rental have crappy cams. |

You needed to be up on your mainsheet reeving. They rigged them in a way so as the traveler wouldn't move more than about 18" and you could only sheet in to about 60% power (quite ingenious, but I'm sure I couldn't recreate it now)We were "busted" after sailing away from the beach, spending five minutes head to wind (re-reeving) and then taking off flying hulls. Boy were the rental guys pissed...chased us down on their "yet-skis" hollering Lord knows what at us, but turn-about's fair play, we looked at them with big grins and hollered back, "No hablo espanol!" ![]() |

I was just in St Thomas and saw a Hobie for rent at Frenchman's Reef beach which is about a 15 minute cab ride from the cruise ship docks. It is a public beach with a beach pavilion and rest rooms. Can't remember if it was a 14 or a 16? Very nice swimming beach and the water looks like it would be Hobie heaven. It was raining so we didn't sail, just went swimming. Hope the sun is shining and the wind is steady for you! |
