I checked the web site out. Your right he does know how to waste money, or get rich people to waste their money. But the hobie stark does have some nice features like the hide away rudders, and the way you attach beach wheels. Thats it, I need battens and a trap line or else I aint happy.

Those aren't just the beach wheels, those are also the trailer. The mast acts as the tounge as well.

Clever, in that useless, stupid sort of way. I seriously doubt the loss of performance or the extra engineering and material required to make the boat the trailer can be easily offset by the cost of a set of cat trax, (which will last indefinetly), or the cost of a trailer.

Being a consumer products guy, I think it's got merit. The market is going downscale big-time and coolness (no matter tacky) sells even tho it seems to us performance guys as dumb. But thats where the market is as of today. We (looking at this post) unfortunately (or fortunately), are the fringe. IMHO. I do think general ID guys (designers) are sometimes too out of touch but I assume Hobie brings them back to reality here and there. :D

I work with, correction, deal with architects on a semi frequent basis in new homes. Some of those jack ass's will waste a whole mess of money, just to create an insignificant shadow somewhere. Sure, idea's are cool. If they aren't practical than its a waste in my opinion. Coming from a motorcycle racing backround where function is the form has probably warped my perception a bit too.

You should have seen the original artists drawing for the Wave... then the first full size version. Looked like it had been in a rear end accident. It took a while and a Hobie team to bring it from there to production.

I would imagine that this is simply a concept and that a final will be very different dependent on reality and feasibility.

I still think the 16, 17 & 18 should be the focus of the Hobie company, these boat race very well and MORE importantly they are great for SAILING !. I got my first Hobie to SAIL, not race and I think that should be the focus, imho, you would get more folks into sailing with a boat that is well rounded I know many folks that have gotten out of Hobies because of all the High Tech stuff. Remember the Hobie was designed originally ,to SAIL when there was no surf, but good wind ,and the raceing followed.

People aren't buying 17s and 18s. At least not new. That's why Hobie Cat stopped making them. It's business suicide to continue making a product that very few people are interested in.

The Hobie 14 was designed for when the wind ruined the waves for surfing. As soon as they had built five production boats, they had a race. Racing and recreational sailing have always gone hand-in-hand. However, the ratio of recreational sailors to racers has always been 8 or 9 to 1.
