Post subject:  Remove play in rudder with non adjustable upper casting?

Hi,

My newly acquired H-14's port rudder 'locks' down but there is quite a lot of movement forward and aft. The plate/pin in the upper casting also doesn't move the cam up when you lift the rudder up either. As mentioned in the title, my upper castings' plates/pin don't adjust. My cam appears to be an original on the port side as it has a rivet through it rather than the screws that come with the newer ones (like in my starboard rudder system).

How do I get rid of this play. I read somewhere about drilling a screw into the cam, I tried that but that only makes the plate catch the cam on the way up, and it didn't work too well, not sure I did it in the right place or with the right size screw.

The play feels like more than an inch, I don't know how it ever worked out of the factory as I can't see how age has increased the distance between the cam and plate.

Any ideas/tips?

Thanks,

Replace the cam first. A worn cam will allow more movement.

Take a look at the rudder FAQ for adjustment and drilling info... http://www.hobiecat.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=467
