Post subject:  Looking to rent a Getaway or H17 with wings in Tampa area

I own a late model Getaway and reside near Chicago and would rather fly to the Tampa area than tow my Getaway down. I plan to be in the Tampa area from March 12th thru the 21st. If I had dagger board experience an 18 would be awsome, but I'm not sure I want to learn on this trip. My girlfriend traps, but I need wings to spare my back. ;)
If anyone knows of a rental in the area please let me know.

Thanks,
Dave

The Doubletree in North Redington Beach has a Getaway to rent, or at least they did last February. I think they charged about $60/hour though.

I'm hoping to get in 4 or 5 days of sailing in at 3-6 hours per day. That's a little steep for me.

Thanks,

Dave

Zupe -- I hope you found Clearwater Community Sailing Center. Right on Clearwater beach, they rent you getaway's, waves, and hobie 16's. Best choice in the area for rentals.

Thanks guitara,

I just got back from the Tampa area last night. We ended up towing my Getaway down. We got about 16 hours of sailing in the gulf and on the inter-coastals. We enjoyed ourselves and met some cool cat sailors in Dunedin on the causeway. They were sailing Mystere Cats!

I checked out CCSC's website, it looks like it's $300 for 10 hours on a Getaway over several days. It may be an option next time I get down there. Especially because 3 college girls in a Ford 500 nailed the Getaway & trailer at speed just outside of Nashville on the way home!

Thanks again,
zupe

OOOH! What happened to the Getaway? Do you have insurance on it? Anyone hurt?

Dave,

I'm out in St. Charles west of Chicago and am always looking for guys to go sailing with. Where do you get out locally? Sorry to hear about your Getaway...

Dan

No one was hurt physically, buy I suspect the kid won't be driving for a while. She has had 3 accidents and 2 speeding tickets in the last year.

Trailer & Getaway are insured.

The Getaway's starboard hull got pushed in far enough that it didn't completely recover and remains dented in about a 1/4" over an area about the size of a football. There's some scratches on and off of the graphics. The trailer's right rear roller support got bent back around 30 degrees, and the vertical roller got bent over around 45 degrees.

I do wonder if it's possible the hull can delaminate, as in the "skin" from the "foamie" interior stuff, now or over time. I imagine the material is stretched a bit. I don't really know if anything else may have been damaged. I'm sure the resale value has diminished. To "properly fix the trailer one would have to do some welding and galvanize the trailer again somehow. Maybe I can get a new hull too. I have to get a damage estimate for the kid's insurance company. Hopefully Matt Miller will chime in

Dan, I sail on Lake Michigan out of Glencoe Beach during the summer. I have a sand spot on the beach. We do venture out to other bodies of water at times.

Thanks,
Dave

The Polyethylene skin and foam inner layer materials are molded together and not merely bonded like glass and foam in fiberglass construction. I do not expect any kind on delamination is likely or even possible with the Getaway materials. I would be concerned if forward of the main beam, but this appears to be aft. Check that the crossbar sleeves on all four corners are OK.

Bummer!

Thanks Matt,
As far as the sleeves, am I looking to see if they came loose from the polyethylene? Are they mechanically held in place, or just bonded to the poly. The stops on the crossbars look ok.

What is the cost of a Getaway hull? My parts & accessories catalog doesn't list a price for the hulls.

Thanks again,
Dave

If there was an issue, you might see cracking or some lateral movement. The sleeves have a "hoop" that is welded to them and extends down in the interior side of the hull... plastic molds around the hoop to further bond it to the sleeve.

Getaway hulls are listed as $1,350.00 in last years price list.
