Post subject:  Race with us in San Diego on New Years Day 2006
I posted the following on the Racing page, but this is the perfect event for none racers as it is really about starting the year off right.

This used to be the largest open class multihull event on the west coast and is usually dominated by Hobie Cats. Lets make it big like it used to be.

Mark your calendars now for Sunday, January 1, 2006. The race is run by San Diego Yacht Club and is basically a tour of San Diego Bay. The launch is at Shelter Island launch ramp and there is ususally a gathering at San Diego Yacht club after the event (informal no host).

What better way to start the New Year than sailing in San Diego? :wink:

I am waiting for San Diego Yacht Club to offically post this years NOR and online registration. As soon as they are available I will post the links here.

My crew, my boat, and I will all be inoperable on the first. I will be there to make some noise though! What are the start times and course route? Where should I set up the lawn chairs?

The first multihull division start is at noon. We launch from the Shelter Island ramp and beg a tow to the East end of Harbor Island near the Ruben E. Lee paddleboat. This is where the start is. The first mark is at the other end of Harbor Island near Tom Hams. We will round a clearing mark then down wind towards channel marker 21 (green) to starboard and down to the mark set off the Coronado Bay Bridge. Back up past 21 and then up to the finish off of Shelter Island past the launch ramp.

The best viewing is at the start, then drive to Sea Port Village to see all the boats big and small drive down wind and back up wind. Last year I had to avoid several big (75' or more) boats, a harbor tour boat, several large power boats. It's everyone's best excuse to clog the bay on New Years Day. After the race, meet us at SDYC for a drink and munchies.

PS- Tradition holds that you take the tide to the first mark (close to rocks) and try to hide from it to the bridge (near north island) and watch for the tide to shift if you are finishing late or the wind is light. Please remember that the Navy guys have guns and do not like anyone for any reason to be too close to their big gray boats.
