How necessary is it to go to a Hobie dealer for hull repair? I'm not to keen on doing the soft spot repairs myself (soft spots on port side in front of the tramp). The nearest Hobie dealer is over 2 hours away, but there are plenty of boat shops within 20 minutes.

Go local save the drive.

I'd base my decision on where to go more on the shop's experience than on whether they're a Hobie dealer or not. Just because they sell Hobies doesn't mean they can do repairs. Call around, see if they're experienced in this type of repair and even ask for references if necessary.

Very true.... start with the dealer. If they don't do repairs themselves, they typically will have a connection to a shop or guy who understands Hobies.
